आचक्षे ते महाप्राज्ञ देव यानी वने हता शर्मिष्ठया महाभाग दुहित्रा वृषपर्वणः ॥ १-७३-२६ ॥
'She said, "O great Brahmana, I must inform you that Devayani has been mistreated in the forest by Sarmishtha, the fortunate daughter of Vrishaparvan."' ॥ 1-73-26 ॥
english translation
शरुत्वा दुहितरं काव्यस तत्र शर्मिष्ठया हताम तवरया निर्ययौ दुःखान मार्गमाणः सुतां वने ॥ १-७३-२७ ॥
'And Kavya, hearing that his daughter had been ill-used by Sarmishtha speedily went out with a heavy heart, seeking her in the woods.' ॥ 1-73-27 ॥
english translation
दृष्ट्वा दुहितरं काव्यॊ देव यानीं ततॊ वने बाहुभ्यां संपरिष्वज्य दुःखितॊ वाक्यम अब्रवीत ॥ १-७३-२८ ॥
'Having seen his daughter Devayani in the forest, Kavya embraced her with his arms and spoke to her, deeply distressed.' ॥ 1-73-28 ॥
english translation
आत्मदॊषैर नियच्छन्ति सर्वे दुःखसुखे जनाः मन्ये दुश्चरितं ते ऽसति यस्येयं निष्कृतिः कृता ॥ १-७३-२९ ॥
'Speaking with a voice choked with grief, she said, "O daughter, the fortunes and misfortunes that people encounter are often the result of their actions. Thus, you must have committed some fault, which has led to this situation."' ॥ 1-73-29 ॥
english translation
[देव] निष्कृतिर मे ऽसतु वा मास्तु शृणुष्वावहितॊ मम शर्मिष्ठया यद उक्तास्मि दुहित्रा वृषपर्वणः सत्यं किलैतत सा पराह दैत्यानाम असि गायनः ॥ १-७३-३० ॥
'Upon hearing this, Devayani responded, "Whether it be a punishment or not, listen to me carefully. Know that Sarmishtha, the daughter of Vrishaparvan, has indeed uttered these words to me. She has declared that you are merely a hired praise-singer for the Asura king!"' ॥ 1-73-30 ॥
