ताम अपृच्छत स दृष्ट्वैव कन्याम अमर वर्णिनीम सान्त्वयित्वा नृपश्रेष्ठः साम्ना परमवल्गुना ॥ १-७३-१६ ॥

'And beholding her within it, the blessed king addressed that girl of the complexion of the celestials, soothing her with sweet words. ' ॥ 1-73-16 ॥

tAma apRcchata sa dRSTvaiva kanyAma amara varNinIma sAntvayitvA nRpazreSThaH sAmnA paramavalgunA ॥ 1-73-16 ॥

का तवं ताम्रनखी शयामा सुमृष्टमणिकुण्डला दीर्घं धयायसि चात्यर्थं कस्माच छवसिषि चातुरा ॥ १-७३-१७ ॥

'He inquired, "Who are you, O beautiful one, with nails gleaming like polished copper and earrings adorned with divine gems? You appear deeply troubled. What causes your tears and distress?"' ॥ 1-73-17 ॥

kA tavaM tAmranakhI zayAmA sumRSTamaNikuNDalA dIrghaM dhayAyasi cAtyarthaM kasmAca chavasiSi cAturA ॥ 1-73-17 ॥

कथं च पतितास्य अस्मिन कूपे वीरुत तृणावृते दुहिता चैव कस्य तवं वद सर्वं सुमध्यमे ॥ १-७३-१८ ॥

'How, indeed, have you fallen into this well-covered with creepers and long grass? And, O slender-waisted girl, please answer truthfully, whose daughter are you?' ॥ 1-73-18 ॥

kathaM ca patitAsya asmina kUpe vIruta tRNAvRte duhitA caiva kasya tavaM vada sarvaM sumadhyame ॥ 1-73-18 ॥

[देव] यॊ ऽसौ देवैर हतान दैत्यान उत्थापयति विद्यया तस्य शुक्रस्य कन्याहं स मां नूनं न बुध्यते ॥ १-७३-१९ ॥

'Devayani responded, "I am the daughter of Sukra, the one who revives the Asuras slain by the gods. It seems he is unaware of my current plight."' ॥ 1-73-19 ॥

[deva] yò 'sau devaira hatAna daityAna utthApayati vidyayA tasya zukrasya kanyAhaM sa mAM nUnaM na budhyate ॥ 1-73-19 ॥

एष मे दक्षिणॊ राजन पाणिस ताम्रनखाङ्गुलिः समुद्धर गृहीत्वा मां कुलीनस तवं हि मे मतः ॥ १-७३-२० ॥

'Devayani said, "This right hand of mine, O king, with nails shining like burnished copper, is extended towards thee. By lifting me out of this, you shall be considered noble in my eyes."' ॥ 1-73-20 ॥

eSa me dakSiNò rAjana pANisa tAmranakhAGguliH samuddhara gRhItvA mAM kulInasa tavaM hi me mataH ॥ 1-73-20 ॥
