अनायुधा सायुधाया रिक्ता कषुभ्यसि भिक्षुकि लप्स्यसे परतियॊद्धारं न हि तवां गणयाम्य अहम ॥ १-७३-११ ॥
'As a beggar-woman, you may freely lament, use harsh words, declare your enmity, or unleash your fury. Yet, your tears of anger are futile, for while I have the power to harm you, you lack the means to retaliate. You seek conflict, but remember, I do not consider you my equal!' ॥ 1-73-11 ॥

[व] समुच्छ्रयं देव यानीं गतां सक्तां च वाससि शर्मिष्ठा पराक्षिपत कूपे ततः सवपुरम आव्रजत ॥ १-७३-१२ ॥
'Vaisampayana continued, 'Hearing these words, Devayani became exceedingly angry and began to pull at her clothes. Sarmishtha thereupon threw her into a well and went home.' ॥ 1-73-12 ॥
english translation
हतेयम इति विज्ञाय शर्मिष्ठा पापनिश्चया अनवेक्ष्य ययौ वेश्म करॊधवेगपरायणाः ॥ १-७३-१३ ॥
'Indeed, the wicked Sarmishtha believing that Devayani was dead, bent her steps home-wards in a wrathful mood.' ॥ 1-73-13 ॥

अथ तं देशम अभ्यागाद ययातिर नहुषात्मजः शरान्तयुग्यः शरान्तहयॊ मृगलिप्सुः पिपासितः ॥ १-७३-१४ ॥
'Then, Nahusha's son, the virtuous and strong Yayati, arrived in that region, eager to hunt, with his horses and chariots ready.' ॥ 1-73-14 ॥

स नाहुषः परेक्षमाण उदपानं गतॊदकम ददर्श कन्यां तां तत्र दीप्ताम अग्निशिखाम इव ॥ १-७३-१५ ॥
'The king, feeling thirsty, noticed a nearby well but found it dry. Peering into it, he beheld a maiden shining as brightly as a blazing fire.' ॥ 1-73-15 ॥
