[व] राजॊपरिचरॊ नाम धर्मनित्यॊ महीपतिः बभूव मृगयां गन्तुं स कदा चिद धृतव्रतः ।। १-५७-१ ।।

'Vaisampayana said, 'There was a king of the name of Uparichara. That monarch was devoted to virtue. He was very much addicted also to hunting.'' ।। 1-57-1 ।।

english translation

[va] rAjòparicarò nAma dharmanityò mahIpatiH babhUva mRgayAM gantuM sa kadA cida dhRtavrataH || 1-57-1 ||

स चेदिविषयं रम्यं वसुः पौरवनन्दनः इन्द्रॊपदेशाज जग्राह गरहणीयं महीपतिः ।। १-५७-२ ।।

'That king of the Paurava race, called also Vasu, conquered the excellent and delightful kingdom of Chedi under instructions from Indra.' ।। 1-57-2 ।।

sa cediviSayaM ramyaM vasuH pauravanandanaH indròpadezAja jagrAha garahaNIyaM mahIpatiH || 1-57-2 ||

तम आश्रमे नयस्तशस्त्रं निवसन्तं तपॊ रतिम देवः साक्षात सवयं वज्री समुपायान महीपतिम ।। १-५७-३ ।।

'Bringing him to the hermitage, where the one devoted to penance resided, the divine Indra himself, the wielder of the thunderbolt, approached the king.' ।। 1-57-3 ।।

english translation

tama Azrame nayastazastraM nivasantaM tapò ratima devaH sAkSAta savayaM vajrI samupAyAna mahIpatima || 1-57-3 ||

इन्द्रत्वम अर्हॊ राजायं तपसेत्य अनुचिन्त्य वै तं सान्त्वेन नृपं साक्षात तपसः संन्यवर्तयत ।। १-५७-४ ।।

'After some time, the king renounced the use of weapons and, residing in a secluded hermitage, engaged in rigorous austerities. The gods, led by Indra, approached the monarch, thinking that he aspired to the leadership of the gods through his intense penance.' ।। 1-57-4 ।।

indratvama arhò rAjAyaM tapasetya anucintya vai taM sAntvena nRpaM sAkSAta tapasaH saMnyavartayata || 1-57-4 ||

[ईन्द्र] न संकीर्येत धर्मॊ ऽयं पृथिव्यां पृथिवीपते तं पाहि धर्मॊ हि धृतः कृत्स्नं धारयते जगत ।। १-५७-५ ।।

'The gods spoke, "O ruler of the earth, ensure that virtue does not decline on the earthly realm! Safeguarded by you, virtue will reciprocate by protecting the entire universe."' ।। 1-57-5 ।।
