[स] एतस्मिन्न एव काले तु जरत्कारुर महातपाः चचार पृथिवीं कृत्स्नां यत्रसायं गृहॊ मुनिः ॥ १-४१-१ ॥

'Meanwhile, the great ascetic Jaratkaru wandered over the whole earth making the place where the evening fell his home for the night.' ॥ 1-41-1 ॥

english translation

[sa] etasminna eva kAle tu jaratkArura mahAtapAH cacAra pRthivIM kRtsnAM yatrasAyaM gRhò muniH ॥ 1-41-1 ॥

चरन दीक्षां महातेजा दुश्चराम अकृतात्मभिः तीर्थेष्व आप्लवनं कुर्वन पुण्येषु विचचार ह ॥ १-४१-२ ॥

'Endowed with ascetic power, he traversed diverse landscapes, undertaking the practice of rigorous vows typically challenging for those less mature, while also purifying himself through immersion in various sacred waters.' ॥ 1-41-2 ॥

carana dIkSAM mahAtejA duzcarAma akRtAtmabhiH tIrtheSva AplavanaM kurvana puNyeSu vicacAra ha ॥ 1-41-2 ॥

वायुभक्षॊ निराहारः शुष्यन्न अहर अहर मुनिः स ददर्श पितॄन गर्ते लम्बमानान अधॊमुखान ॥ १-४१-३ ॥

'And the Muni had air alone for his food and was free from desire of worldly enjoyment. And he became daily emaciated and grew lean-fleshed. And one day he saw the spirits of his ancestors, heads down, in a hole.' ॥ 1-41-3 ॥

vAyubhakSò nirAhAraH zuSyanna ahara ahara muniH sa dadarza pitRRna garte lambamAnAna adhòmukhAna ॥ 1-41-3 ॥

एकतन्त्व अवशिष्टं वै वीरणस्तम्बम आश्रितान तं च तन्तुं शनैर आखुम आददानं बिलाश्रयम ॥ १-४१-४ ॥

'With just a single thread woven from the roots of the Virana plant, and even that lone strand slowly being gnawed upon by a sizable rat inhabiting the hole, the precarious nature of the situation became increasingly evident.' ॥ 1-41-4 ॥

ekatantva avaziSTaM vai vIraNastambama AzritAna taM ca tantuM zanaira Akhuma AdadAnaM bilAzrayama ॥ 1-41-4 ॥

निराहारान कृशान दीनान गर्ते ऽऽरतांस तराणम इच्छतः उपसृत्य स तान दीनान दीनरूपॊ ऽभयभाषत ॥ १-४१-५ ॥

'And the Pitris in that hole were without food, emaciated, pitiable, and eagerly desirous of salvation. And Jaratkaru, approaching the pitiable one, himself in humble guise.' ॥ 1-41-5 ॥

nirAhArAna kRzAna dInAna garte ''ratAMsa tarANama icchataH upasRtya sa tAna dInAna dInarUpò 'bhayabhASata ॥ 1-41-5 ॥
