स तथेत्य उक्त्वा गुरु कुले दीर्घकालं गुरुशुश्रूषणपरॊ ऽवसत गौर इव नित्यं गुरुषु धूर्षु नियुज्यमानः शीतॊष्णक्षुत तृष्णा दुःखसहः सर्वत्राप्रतिकूलः ॥ १-३-८१ ॥
'He, having thus been instructed, resided in his teacher's household for an extended period, dedicated to serving his preceptor. Like a cow constantly engaged in grazing, enduring cold and heat, hunger and thirst, he remained unfazed by adversity, adaptable in all situations." ॥ 1-3-81 ॥
english translation
sa tathetya uktvA guru kule dIrghakAlaM guruzuzrUSaNaparò 'vasata gaura iva nityaM guruSu dhUrSu niyujyamAnaH zItòSNakSuta tRSNA duHkhasahaH sarvatrApratikUlaH ॥ 1-3-81 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतस्य महता कालेन गुरुः परितॊषं जगाम तत्परितॊषाच च शरेयः सर्वज्ञतां चावाप एषा तस्यापि परीक्षा वेदस्य ॥ १-३-८२ ॥
'After a considerable time, his teacher, pleased with him, attained contentment. Due to this satisfaction, Upamanyu not only acquired prosperity but also gained comprehensive knowledge. This, too, was a test for him in the realm of the Vedas.' ॥ 1-3-82 ॥
english translation
tasya mahatA kAlena guruH paritòSaM jagAma tatparitòSAca ca zareyaH sarvajJatAM cAvApa eSA tasyApi parIkSA vedasya ॥ 1-3-82 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस उपाध्यायेनानुज्ञातः समावृत्तस तस्माद गुरु कुलवासाद गृहाश्रमं परत्यपद्यत तस्यापि सवगृहे वसतस तरयः शिष्या बभूवुः ॥ १-३-८३ ॥
'Having received permission from his preceptor and having completed his education, Upamanyu left his teacher's abode and embraced the household life. Dwelling in his own home, he too, like his teacher, became surrounded by disciples in his household.' ॥ 1-3-83 ॥
english translation
sa upAdhyAyenAnujJAtaH samAvRttasa tasmAda guru kulavAsAda gRhAzramaM paratyapadyata tasyApi savagRhe vasatasa tarayaH ziSyA babhUvuH ॥ 1-3-83 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस शिष्यान न किं चिद उवाच कर्म वा करियतां गुरुशुश्रूषा वेति दुःखाभिज्ञॊ हि गुरु कुलवासस्य शिष्यान परिक्लेशेन यॊजयितुं नेयेष ॥ १-३-८४ ॥
'Residing in his household, Upamanyu acquired three disciples. Remarkably, he refrained from assigning them any tasks or demanding unwavering obedience. Having endured considerable hardship during his stay in his teacher's family, he chose not to subject his disciples to unnecessary severity.' ॥ 1-3-84 ॥

sa ziSyAna na kiM cida uvAca karma vA kariyatAM guruzuzrUSA veti duHkhAbhijJò hi guru kulavAsasya ziSyAna pariklezena yòjayituM neyeSa ॥ 1-3-84 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअथ कस्य चित कालस्य वेदं बराह्मणं जनमेजयः पौष्यश च कषत्रियाव उपेत्यॊपाध्यायं वरयां चक्रतुः ॥ १-३-८५ ॥
'After a certain time, Janamejaya and Paushya, both of the order of Kshatriyas, arriving at his residence appointed the Brahman. Veda, as their spiritual guide (Upadhyaya).' ॥ 1-3-85 ॥

atha kasya cita kAlasya vedaM barAhmaNaM janamejayaH pauSyaza ca kaSatriyAva upetyòpAdhyAyaM varayAM cakratuH ॥ 1-3-85 ॥
