स तथेति परतिज्ञाय गा रक्षित्वा पुनर उपाध्याय गृहान एत्य पुरॊर अग्रतः सथित्वा नमश चक्रे ॥ १-३-४६ ॥
'Agreeing to this directive, Upamanyu resumed his duty of tending to the cows. Following his preceptor's guidance, he refrained from consuming alms and had no other sustenance. He abstained from drinking milk and avoided tasting the froth.' ॥ 1-3-46 ॥

तम उपाध्यायः पीवानम एवापश्यत उवाच चैनम भैक्षं नाश्नासि न चान्यच चरसि पयॊ न पिबसि पीवान असि केन वृत्तिं कल्पयसीति ॥ १-३-४७ ॥
'Observing Upamanyu still drinking water, the teacher addressed him, "You neither partake in alms nor engage in any other occupation. You do not drink milk, yet you are seen drinking water. How have you arranged for your sustenance?" ' ॥ 1-3-47 ॥
english translation
स एवम उक्त उपाध्यायं परत्युवाच भॊः फेनं पिबामि यम इमे वत्सा मातॄणां सतनं पिबन्त उद्गिरन्तीति ॥ १-३-४८ ॥
'Responding to the teacher's inquiry, Upamanyu said, "Oh sir, I drink the froth that these calves produce while suckling their mothers."' ॥ 1-3-48 ॥

तम उपाध्यायः परत्युवाच एते तवद अनुकम्पया गुणवन्तॊ वत्साः परभूततरं फेनम उद्गिरन्ति तद एवम अपि वत्सानां वृत्त्युपरॊधं करॊष्य एवं वर्तमानः फेनम अपि भवान न पातुम अर्हतीति ॥ १-३-४९ ॥
'The preceptor responded, "It appears that these benevolent calves, in their compassion for you, produce abundant froth. Would you hinder their complete nourishment by your actions? Understand that it is improper for you to consume the froth."' ॥ 1-3-49 ॥

स तथेति परतिज्ञाय निराहारस ता गा अरक्षत तथा परतिषिद्धॊ भैक्षं नाश्नाति न चान्यच चरति पयॊ न पिबति फेनं नॊपयुङ्क्ते ॥ १-३-५० ॥
'Acknowledging this, Upamanyu continued to tend to the cows without consuming any sustenance. He strictly abstained from begging for alms and refrained from engaging in any other activities. He neither drank milk nor partook in the froth produced by the calves.' ॥ 1-3-50 ॥
