स कदा चिद अरण्ये कषुधार्तॊ ऽरकपत्राण्य अभक्षयत ॥ १-३-५१ ॥
'And Upamanyu, one day, oppressed by hunger, when in a forest, ate of the leaves of the Arka (Asclepias gigantea).' ॥ 1-3-51 ॥
english translation
sa kadA cida araNye kaSudhArtò 'rakapatrANya abhakSayata ॥ 1-3-51 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस तैर अर्कपत्रैर भक्षितैः कषार कटूष्ण विपाकिभिश चक्षुष्य उपहतॊ ऽनधॊ ऽभवत सॊ ऽनधॊ ऽपि चङ्क्रम्यमाणः कूपे ऽपतत ॥ १-३-५२ ॥
'And his eyes being affected by the pungent, acrimonious, crude, and saline properties of the leaves that he had eaten, he became blind. And as he was crawling about, he fell into a pit.' ॥ 1-3-52 ॥
english translation
sa taira arkapatraira bhakSitaiH kaSAra kaTUSNa vipAkibhiza cakSuSya upahatò 'nadhò 'bhavata sò 'nadhò 'pi caGkramyamANaH kUpe 'patata ॥ 1-3-52 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअथ तस्मिन्न अनागच्छत्य उपाध्यायः शिष्यान अवॊचत मयॊपमन्युः सर्वतः परतिषिद्धः स नियतं कुपितः ततॊ नागच्छति चिरगतश चेति ॥ १-३-५३ ॥
'As the day drew to a close and the sun descended behind the western peaks, Upamanyu had not returned. The preceptor, noticing his absence, inquired with the disciples, who informed him that Upamanyu had gone out with the cattle, forbidden from all sides, must be angry. He does not usually stay away for so long; something might have happened.' ॥ 1-3-53 ॥
english translation
atha tasminna anAgacchatya upAdhyAyaH ziSyAna avòcata mayòpamanyuH sarvataH paratiSiddhaH sa niyataM kupitaH tatò nAgacchati ciragataza ceti ॥ 1-3-53 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस एवम उक्त्वा गत्वारण्यम उपमन्यॊर आह्वानं चक्रे भॊ उपमन्यॊ कवासि वत्सैहीति ॥ १-३-५४ ॥
'Having said this, he went to the forest and called out for Upamanyu, saying, "Upamanyu, where are you, O son of Kava? Come, O calf!"' ॥ 1-3-54 ॥

sa evama uktvA gatvAraNyama upamanyòra AhvAnaM cakre bhò upamanyò kavAsi vatsaihIti ॥ 1-3-54 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस तदाह्वानम उपाध्यायाच छरुत्वा परत्युवाचॊच्चैः अयम अस्मि भॊ उपाध्याय कूपे पतित इति ॥ १-३-५५ ॥
'In response to the teacher's calling, Upamanyu, from within the well, shouted, "I am here, O teacher! I have fallen into the well."' ॥ 1-3-55 ॥

sa tadAhvAnama upAdhyAyAca charutvA paratyuvAcòccaiH ayama asmi bhò upAdhyAya kUpe patita iti ॥ 1-3-55 ॥
