सॊ ऽपश्यत पथि नग्नं शरमणम आगच्छन्तं मुहुर मुहुर दृश्यमानम अदृश्यमानं च अथॊत्तङ्कस ते कुण्डले भूमौ निक्षिप्यॊदकार्थं परचक्रमे ।। १-३-१३६ ।।

'As Utanka walked along the road, he noticed a barefoot beggar intermittently appearing and disappearing. Deciding to fetch water, Utanka placed the earrings on the ground.' ।। 1-3-136 ।।

sò 'pazyata pathi nagnaM zaramaNama AgacchantaM muhura muhura dRzyamAnama adRzyamAnaM ca athòttaGkasa te kuNDale bhUmau nikSipyòdakArthaM paracakrame || 1-3-136 ||

एतस्मिन्न अन्तरे स शरमणस तवरमाण उपसृत्य ते कुण्डले गृहीत्वा पराद्रवत तम उत्तङ्कॊ ऽभिसृत्य जग्राह स तद रूपं विहाय तक्षक रूपं कृत्वा सहसा धरण्यां विवृतं महाबिलं विवेश ।। १-३-१३७ ।।

'In the meantime, the beggar came quickly to the spot and taking up the ear-rings ran away. And Utanka having completed his ablutions in water and purified himself and having also reverently bowed down to the gods and his spiritual masters pursued the thief with the utmost speed. And having with great difficulty overtaken him, he seized him by force. But at that instant the person seized, quitting the form of a beggar and assuming his real form, viz., that of Takshaka, speedily entered a large hole open in the ground. And having got in, Takshaka proceeded to his abode, the region of the serpents.' ।। 1-3-137 ।।

etasminna antare sa zaramaNasa tavaramANa upasRtya te kuNDale gRhItvA parAdravata tama uttaGkò 'bhisRtya jagrAha sa tada rUpaM vihAya takSaka rUpaM kRtvA sahasA dharaNyAM vivRtaM mahAbilaM viveza || 1-3-137 ||

परविश्य च नागलॊकं सवभवनम अगच्छत तम उत्तङ्कॊ ऽनवाविवेश तेनैव बिलेन परविश्य च नागान अस्तुवद एभिः शलॊकैः ।। १-३-१३८ ।।

'Now, Utanka, recollecting the words of the Queen, pursued the Serpent, and began to dig open the hole with a stick but was unable to make much progress. Having entered the world of serpents and reaching his abode, Utanka, in the form of Takshaka, praised the other snakes with verses.' ।। 1-3-137 ।।

य ऐरावत राजानः सर्पाः समितिशॊभनाः वर्षन्त इव जीमूताः सविद्युत्पवनेरिताः ।। १-३-१३९ ।।

'And Indra beholding his distress sent his thunder-bolt (Vajra) to his assistance. Then the thunder-bolt entering that stick enlarged that hole.' ।। 1-3-139 ।।

सुरूपाश च विरूपाश च तथा कल्माषकुण्डलाः आदित्यवन नाकपृष्ठे रेजुर ऐरावतॊद्भवाः ।। १-३-१४० ।।

'Utanka then glorified the serpents by the following slokas:"O serpents, subjects of King Airavata, resplendent in warfare, casting weapons on the battlefield akin to lightning-laden clouds propelled by the winds! Adorned with diverse and handsome forms, embellished with multicolored earrings, you, offspring of Airavata, gleam like the sun in the sky!" ।। 1-3-140 ।।
