[वै] मन्दपालॊ ऽपि कौरव्य चिन्तयानः सुतांस तदा उक्तवान अप्य अशीतांशुं नैव स सम न तप्यते ॥ १-२२४-१ ॥
'Vaisampayana said, "O scion of the Kuru race, the sage Mandapala was deeply concerned about his children, despite having spoken of them to the fierce god of rays. Indeed, his mind found no peace."' ॥ 1-224-1 ॥
english translation
[vai] mandapAlò 'pi kauravya cintayAnaH sutAMsa tadA uktavAna apya azItAMzuM naiva sa sama na tapyate ॥ 1-224-1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस तप्यमानः पुत्रार्थे लपिताम इदम अब्रवीत कथं नव अशक्ताः पलवने लपिते मम पुत्रकाः ॥ १-२२४-२ ॥
'He, tormented by the desire for children, said this to Lapita: 'How is it that my sons are unable to swim, O Lapita?'' ॥ 1-224-2 ॥
english translation
sa tapyamAnaH putrArthe lapitAma idama abravIta kathaM nava azaktAH palavane lapite mama putrakAH ॥ 1-224-2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptवर्धमाने हुतवहे वाते शीघ्रं परवायति असमर्था विमॊक्षाय भविष्यन्ति ममात्मजाः ॥ १-२२४-३ ॥
'When the fire grows in strength and the wind begins to blow violently, my children will scarcely be able to save themselves.' ॥ 1-224-3 ॥

vardhamAne hutavahe vAte zIghraM paravAyati asamarthA vimòkSAya bhaviSyanti mamAtmajAH ॥ 1-224-3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकथं नव अशक्ता तराणाय माता तेषां तपस्विनी भविष्यत्य असुखाविष्टा पुत्र तराणम अपश्यती ॥ १-२२४-४ ॥
'How will their mother be able to rescue them? That devoted woman will be overwhelmed with great sorrow when she cannot save her children.' ॥ 1-224-4 ॥

kathaM nava azaktA tarANAya mAtA teSAM tapasvinI bhaviSyatya asukhAviSTA putra tarANama apazyatI ॥ 1-224-4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकथं नु सरणे ऽशक्तान पतने च ममात्मजान संतप्यमाना अभितॊ वाशमानाभिधावती ॥ १-२२४-५ ॥
'Oh, how will she compose herself, uttering various lamentations for my children who cannot escape or rise up into the air?' ॥ 1-224-5 ॥

kathaM nu saraNe 'zaktAna patane ca mamAtmajAna saMtapyamAnA abhitò vAzamAnAbhidhAvatI ॥ 1-224-5 ॥
