स चिन्तयन्न अभ्यगच्छद बहुल परसवान खगान शार्ङ्गिकां शार्ङ्गकॊ भूत्वा जरितां समुपेयिवान ।। १-२२०-१६ ।।

'After reflecting, the sage realized that birds alone were blessed with fertility among all creatures.' ।। 1-220-16 ।।

english translation

sa cintayanna abhyagacchada bahula parasavAna khagAna zArGgikAM zArGgakò bhUtvA jaritAM samupeyivAna || 1-220-16 ||

तस्यां पुत्रान अजनयच चतुरॊ बरह्मवादिनः तान अपास्य स तत्रैव जगाम लपितां परति बालान सुतान अण्ड गतान मात्रा सह मुनिर वने ।। १-२२०-१७ ।।

'Taking the form of a Sarngaka bird, the sage had a union with a female bird of the same species named Jarita. He fathered four sons from her, all proficient in Vedic recitation. Leaving all those sons of his with their mother in that forest, while they were still within eggs, the ascetic went to (another wife called by the name of) Lapita.' ।। 1-220-17 ।।

tasyAM putrAna ajanayaca caturò barahmavAdinaH tAna apAsya sa tatraiva jagAma lapitAM parati bAlAna sutAna aNDa gatAna mAtrA saha munira vane || 1-220-17 ||

तस्मिन गते महाभागे लपितां परति भारत अपत्यस्नेहसंविग्ना जरिता बह्व अचिन्तयत ।। १-२२०-१८ ।।

'After that great one had departed, O Bharata, The elderly mother, distressed with love for her offspring, Lamented and pondered much.' ।। 1-220-18 ।।

english translation

tasmina gate mahAbhAge lapitAM parati bhArata apatyasnehasaMvignA jaritA bahva acintayata || 1-220-18 ||

तेन तयक्तान असंत्याज्यान ऋषीन अण्ड गतान वने नाजहत पुत्रकान आर्ता जरिता खाण्डवे नृप बभार चैतान संजातान सववृत्त्या सनेहविक्लवा ।। १-२२०-१९ ।।

'And, O Bharata, as the exalted sage departed for the company of Lapita, moved by affection for her offspring, Jarita became deeply contemplative. Though abandoned by their father in the forest of Khandava, Jarita, consumed by her maternal affection, could not abandon her offspring.' ।। 1-220-19 ।।

english translation

tena tayaktAna asaMtyAjyAna RSIna aNDa gatAna vane nAjahata putrakAna ArtA jaritA khANDave nRpa babhAra caitAna saMjAtAna savavRttyA sanehaviklavA || 1-220-19 ||

ततॊ ऽगनिं खाण्डवं दग्धुम आयान्तं दृष्टवान ऋषिः मन्दपालश चरंस तस्मिन वने लपितया सह ।। १-२२०-२० ।।

'Then the sage Mandapala, who was wandering in that forest with his wife, Saw Agni (the fire god) approaching to burn the Khandava forest.' ।। 1-220-20 ।।

tatò 'ganiM khANDavaM dagdhuma AyAntaM dRSTavAna RSiH mandapAlaza caraMsa tasmina vane lapitayA saha || 1-220-20 ||
