[देवाह] ऋणिनॊ मानवा बरह्मञ जायन्ते येन तच छृणु करियाभिर बरह्मचर्येण परजया च न संशयः ॥ १-२२०-११ ॥

'The celestials answered, "Hear, O Brahmana, about the acts and reasons that cause men to be born as debtors. Without a doubt, men are born debtors for the sake of religious rites, studies according to the ordinance, and progeny. These debts are discharged through sacrifices, asceticism, and offspring."' ॥ 1-220-11 ॥

[devAha] RNinò mAnavA barahmaJa jAyante yena taca chRNu kariyAbhira barahmacaryeNa parajayA ca na saMzayaH ॥ 1-220-11 ॥

तद अपाक्रियते सर्वं यज्ञेन तपसा सुतैः तपस्वी यज्ञकृच चासि न तु ते विद्यते परजा ॥ १-२२०-१२ ॥

'All debts are absolved through sacrifices, penance, and offspring. You are an ascetic and have performed sacrifices, but you have no progeny.' ॥ 1-220-12 ॥

tada apAkriyate sarvaM yajJena tapasA sutaiH tapasvI yajJakRca cAsi na tu te vidyate parajA ॥ 1-220-12 ॥

त इमे परसवस्यार्थे तव लॊकाः समावृताः परजायस्व ततॊ लॊकान उपभॊक्तासि शाश्वतान ॥ १-२२०-१३ ॥

'While you are an ascetic and have sacrificed, you have no offspring. These regions are closed to you solely due to the lack of children. Therefore, beget children!' ॥ 1-220-13 ॥

ta ime parasavasyArthe tava lòkAH samAvRtAH parajAyasva tatò lòkAna upabhòktAsi zAzvatAna ॥ 1-220-13 ॥

पुन नाम्नॊ नरकात पुत्रस तरातीति पितरं मुने तस्माद अपत्यसंताने यतस्व दविजसत्तम ॥ १-२२०-१४ ॥

'Thou shalt then enjoy manifold regions of felicity. The Vedas declare that a son rescues his father from a hell called Put. Therefore, O best of Brahmanas, strive to beget offspring.' ॥ 1-220-14 ॥

puna nAmnò narakAta putrasa tarAtIti pitaraM mune tasmAda apatyasaMtAne yatasva davijasattama ॥ 1-220-14 ॥

[वै] तच छरुत्वा मन्दपालस तु तेषां वाक्यं दिवौकसाम कव नु शीघ्रम अपत्यं सयाद बहुलं चेत्य अचिन्तयत ॥ १-२२०-१५ ॥

'Vaisampayana continued, "Having heard these words of the celestial beings, Mandapala contemplated how he could best achieve the greatest number of offspring in the shortest possible time."' ॥ 1-220-15 ॥

[vai] taca charutvA mandapAlasa tu teSAM vAkyaM divaukasAma kava nu zIghrama apatyaM sayAda bahulaM cetya acintayata ॥ 1-220-15 ॥
