स मार्गम आस्थितॊ राजन्न ऋषीणाम ऊर्ध्वरेतसाम सवाध्यायवान धर्मरतस तपस्वी विजितेन्द्रियः ॥ १-२२०-६ ॥

'Following the footsteps of ascetics who had mastered their seminal fluid, O monarch, that sage devoted himself to study and virtue, with every sense completely under control.' ॥ 1-220-6 ॥

sa mArgama Asthitò rAjanna RSINAma UrdhvaretasAma savAdhyAyavAna dharmaratasa tapasvI vijitendriyaH ॥ 1-220-6 ॥

स गत्वा तपसः पारं देहम उत्सृज्य भारत जगाम पितृलॊकाय न लेभे तत्र तत फलम ॥ १-२२०-७ ॥

'Having crossed the bounds of asceticism, O Bharata, he departed from his mortal form and ascended to the realm of the ancestors. However, upon reaching there, he did not obtain the expected fruit of his deeds.' ॥ 1-220-7 ॥

sa gatvA tapasaH pAraM dehama utsRjya bhArata jagAma pitRlòkAya na lebhe tatra tata phalama ॥ 1-220-7 ॥

स लॊकान अफलान दृष्ट्वा तपसा निर्जितान अपि पप्रच्छ धर्मराजस्य समीपस्थान दिवौकसः ॥ १-२२०-८ ॥

'He questioned the celestial beings seated around the king of the dead, asking, "Why have these realms become inaccessible to me despite my ascetic endeavors?"' ॥ 1-220-8 ॥

sa lòkAna aphalAna dRSTvA tapasA nirjitAna api papraccha dharmarAjasya samIpasthAna divaukasaH ॥ 1-220-8 ॥

किमर्थम आवृता लॊका ममैते तपसार्जिताः किं मया न कृतं तत्र यस्येदं कर्मणः फलम ॥ १-२२०-९ ॥

'Why have these realms been closed to me, attained as they were through my asceticism? What have I failed to do to achieve the fruit of my actions there?' ॥ 1-220-9 ॥

kimarthama AvRtA lòkA mamaite tapasArjitAH kiM mayA na kRtaM tatra yasyedaM karmaNaH phalama ॥ 1-220-9 ॥

तत्राहं तत करिष्यामि यदर्थम इदम आवृतम फलम एतस्य तपसः कथयध्वं दिवौकसः ॥ १-२२०-१० ॥

'Have I not performed the deeds whose fruits are these regions? O inhabitants of heaven, tell me why these regions are barred to me! I will do whatever is necessary to attain the fruits of my ascetic penances."' ॥ 1-220-10 ॥

tatrAhaM tata kariSyAmi yadarthama idama AvRtama phalama etasya tapasaH kathayadhvaM divaukasaH ॥ 1-220-10 ॥
