कृत्वा दीक्षां गतौ विन्ध्यं तत्रॊग्रं तेपतुस तपः तौ तु दीर्घेण कालेन तपॊ युक्तौ बभूवतुः ॥ १-२०१-६ ॥
'They were of identical disposition and habits, appearing as if one individual split into two. Endowed with great energy and steadfast in their resolutions, they matured together in all endeavors they undertook. Always united in their aim to conquer the three worlds, the brothers underwent rigorous ascetic penances in the Vindhya mountains after receiving proper initiation.' ॥ 1-201-6 ॥

कषुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्तौ जटावल्कलधारिणौ मलॊपचित सर्वाङ्गौ वायुभक्षौ बभूवतुः ॥ १-२०१-७ ॥
'Exhausted by hunger and thirst, wearing matted hair and bark garments, Their bodies covered with dirt, they subsisted on air.' ॥ 1-201-7 ॥

आत्ममांसानि जुह्वन्तौ पादाङ्गुष्ठाग्रधिष्ठितौ ऊर्ध्वबाहू चानिमिषौ दीर्घकालं धृतव्रतौ ॥ १-२०१-८ ॥
'Offering their flesh as a sacrifice, standing on the tips of their big toes, With arms raised, eyes unblinking, they held their vow for a long time.' ॥ 1-201-8 ॥

तयॊस तपः परभावेण दीर्घकालं परतापितः धूमं परमुमुचे विन्ध्यस तद अद्भुतम इवाभवत ॥ १-२०१-९ ॥
'Their arms upraised, and eye fixed, long was the period for which they observed their vows. And during their ascetic penances, a wonderful incident occurred there. For the mountains of Vindhya, heated for a long course of years by the power of their ascetic austerities, began to emit vapor from every part of their bodies.' ॥ 1-201-9 ॥

ततॊ देवाभवन भीता उग्रं दृष्ट्वा तयॊस तपः तपॊ विघातार्थम अथॊ देवा विघ्नानि चक्रिरे ॥ १-२०१-१० ॥
'Upon seeing the severity of their austerities, the celestials were alarmed. The gods began to create numerous obstacles to hinder the progress of their asceticism.' ॥ 1-201-10 ॥
