[नारद] शृणु मे विस्तरेणेमम इतिहासं पुरातनम भरातृभीः सहितः पार्थ यथावृत्तं युधिष्ठिर ॥ १-२०१-१ ॥
'Vaisampayana responded, "Upon hearing Yudhishthira's words, Narada replied, 'O son of Pritha, listen with your brothers as I narrate this ancient tale exactly as it unfolded, O Yudhishthira.'"' ॥ 1-201-1 ॥

महासुरस्यान्ववाये हिरण्यकशिपॊः पुरा निकुम्भॊ नाम दैत्येन्द्रस तेजस्वी बलवान अभूत ॥ १-२०१-२ ॥
'In ancient times, a mighty Daitya named Nikumbha, endowed with immense energy and strength, was born in the lineage of the great Asura, Hiranyakashipu.' ॥ 1-201-2 ॥
english translation
तस्य पुत्रौ महावीर्यौ जातौ भीमपराक्रमौ सहान्यॊन्येन भुञ्जाते विनान्यॊन्यं न गच्छतः ॥ १-२०१-३ ॥
'To Nikumbha were born two sons named Sunda and Upasunda, both mighty Asuras endowed with immense energy and fearsome prowess.' ॥ 1-201-3 ॥
english translation
अन्यॊन्यस्य परियकराव अन्यॊन्यस्य परियंवदौ एकशीलसमाचारौ दविधैवैकं यथा कृतौ ॥ १-२०१-४ ॥
'The brothers were fierce and possessed wicked hearts. These Daityas shared the same determination, always striving towards common tasks and goals.' ॥ 1-201-4 ॥
english translation
तौ विवृद्धौ महावीर्यौ कार्येष्व अप्य एकनिश्चयौ तरैलॊक्यविजयार्थाय समास्थायैक निश्चयम ॥ १-२०१-५ ॥
'They always shared happiness and sorrow. Each spoke and acted following the other's wishes. The brothers were inseparable, never apart and always together wherever they went.' ॥ 1-201-5 ॥
