आत्मेव वेदितव्येषु परियेष्व इव च जीवितम इतिहासः परधानार्थः शरेष्ठः सर्वागमेष्व अयम ॥ १-२-३१ ॥
'Just as the self is paramount among objects of knowledge and life is cherished among things dear, so is this narrative, which serves as the key to understanding Brahma, the foremost among all scriptures. Every tale in the world relies on this historical epic, much like the body relies on its foundational foot.'॥ 1-2-31 ॥

Atmeva veditavyeSu pariyeSva iva ca jIvitama itihAsaH paradhAnArthaH zareSThaH sarvAgameSva ayama ॥ 1-2-31 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptइतिहासॊत्तमे हय अस्मिन्न अर्पिता बुद्धिर उत्तमा खरव्यञ्जनयॊः कृत्स्ना लॊकवेदाश्रयेव वाक ॥ १-२-३२ ॥
'As masters of good lineage are ever attended upon by servants desirous of preferment so is the Bharata cherished by all poets. As the words constituting the several branches of knowledge appertaining to the world and the Veda display only vowels and consonants, so this excellent history displayed only the highest wisdom.'॥ 1-2-32 ॥

itihAsòttame haya asminna arpitA buddhira uttamA kharavyaJjanayòH kRtsnA lòkavedAzrayeva vAka ॥ 1-2-32 ॥

'Explore the diverse chapters of this profound historical epic, the Mahabharata, which has unfolded through the sagacious narrative of those well-acquainted with its intricacies.'॥ 1-2-33 ॥

asya parajJAbhipannasya vicitrapadaparvaNaH bhAratasyetihAsasya zarUyatAM parva saMgrahaH ॥ 1-2-33 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपर्वानुक्रमणी पूर्वं दवितीयं पर्व संग्रहः पौष्यं पौलॊमम आस्तीकम आदिवंशावतारणम ॥ १-२-३४ ॥
'The first parva is called Anukramanika; the second, Sangraha; then Paushya; then Pauloma; the Astika; then Adivansavatarana. Then comes the Sambhava of wonderful and thrilling incidents.'॥ 1-2-34 ॥

'Following that is the remarkable Haidimba Parva, a divine creation, which unfolds the wondrous events surrounding the burning of the house.'॥ 1-2-35 ॥
