[देवाह] मर्त्या हय अमर्त्याः संवृत्ता न विशेषॊ ऽसति कश चन अविशेषाद उद्विजन्तॊ विशेषार्थम इहागताः ।। १-१८९-६ ।।

sanskrit

'The celestials replied, "The mortals have all attained immortality. There is now no distinction between us and them. Troubled by the disappearance of all differentiation, we have come to you so that you may differentiate us from them."' ।। 1-189-6 ।।

english translation

[devAha] martyA haya amartyAH saMvRttA na vizeSò 'sati kaza cana avizeSAda udvijantò vizeSArthama ihAgatAH || 1-189-6 ||

hk transliteration

[बरह्मा] वैवस्वतॊ वयापृतः सत्र हेतॊस; तेन तव इमे न मरियन्ते मनुष्याः तस्मिन्न एकाग्रे कृतसर्वकार्ये; तत एषां भवितैवान्त कालः ।। १-१८९-७ ।।

sanskrit

'Then the Creator said, "The son of Vivaswat is currently occupied with the grand sacrifice. That is why humans are not dying. However, when Yama's duties related to the sacrifice conclude, humans will once again begin to perish as before.' ।। 1-189-7 ।।

english translation

[barahmA] vaivasvatò vayApRtaH satra hetòsa; tena tava ime na mariyante manuSyAH tasminna ekAgre kRtasarvakArye; tata eSAM bhavitaivAnta kAlaH || 1-189-7 ||

hk transliteration

वैवस्वतस्यापि तनुर विभूता; वीर्येण युष्माकम उत परयुक्ता सैषाम अन्तॊ भविता हय अन्तकाले; तनुर हि वीर्यं भविता नरेषु ।। १-१८९-८ ।।

sanskrit

'When that time arrives, Yama will sweep away thousands of earth's inhabitants who will barely have any remaining vigor.' ।। 1-189-8 ।।

english translation

vaivasvatasyApi tanura vibhUtA; vIryeNa yuSmAkama uta parayuktA saiSAma antò bhavitA haya antakAle; tanura hi vIryaM bhavitA nareSu || 1-189-8 ||

[वयास] ततस तु ते पूर्वज देववाक्यं; शरुत्वा देवा यत्र देवा यजन्ते समासीनास ते समेता महाबला; भागी रथ्यां ददृशुः पुण्डरीकम ।। १-१८९-९ ।।

sanskrit

'Vyasa continued, "Upon hearing these words of the primordial deity, the celestials returned to the location of the grand sacrifice. There, seated beside the Bhagirathi, the mighty one beheld a golden lotus floating downstream."' ।। 1-189-9 ।।

english translation

[vayAsa] tatasa tu te pUrvaja devavAkyaM; zarutvA devA yatra devA yajante samAsInAsa te sametA mahAbalA; bhAgI rathyAM dadRzuH puNDarIkama || 1-189-9 ||

दृष्ट्वा च तद विस्मितास ते बभूवुस; तेषाम इन्द्रस तत्र शूरॊ जगाम सॊ ऽपश्यद यॊषाम अथ पावकप्रभां; यत्र गङ्गा सततं संप्रसूता ।। १-१८९-१० ।।

sanskrit

'Seeing that golden lotus, they were filled with wonder. Among them, the foremost celestial, Indra, eager to ascertain its origin, followed upstream along the course of the Bhagirathi.' ।। 1-189-10 ।।

dRSTvA ca tada vismitAsa te babhUvusa; teSAma indrasa tatra zUrò jagAma sò 'pazyada yòSAma atha pAvakaprabhAM; yatra gaGgA satataM saMprasUtA || 1-189-10 ||
