ते नर्दमाना इव कालमेघाः; कथा विचित्राः कथयां बभूवुः न वैश्यशूद्रौपयिकीः कथास ता; न च दविजातेः कथयन्ति वीराः ।। १-१८५-११ ।।

sanskrit

'The bed they lay upon was made of kusa grass, and their deer-skins were spread on it. Before sleeping, they conversed on various topics in voices deep as those of black clouds. Their conversation indicated that they were neither Vaishyas, nor Shudras, nor Brahmanas.' ।। 1-185-11 ।।

english translation

te nardamAnA iva kAlameghAH; kathA vicitrAH kathayAM babhUvuH na vaizyazUdraupayikIH kathAsa tA; na ca davijAteH kathayanti vIrAH || 1-185-11 ||

निःसंशयं कषत्रिय पुंगवास ते; यथा हि युद्धं कथयन्ति राजन आशा हि नॊ वयक्तम इयं समृद्धा; मुक्तान हि पार्थाञ शृणुमॊ ऽगनिदाहात ।। १-१८५-१२ ।।

'Indeed, O monarch, they are undoubtedly exemplary Kshatriyas, as evidenced by their discussion on military matters. It appears, O father, that our hopes have been realized, for we have heard that the sons of Kunti escaped unscathed from the conflagration of the lac-house.' ।। 1-185-12 ।।

niHsaMzayaM kaSatriya puMgavAsa te; yathA hi yuddhaM kathayanti rAjana AzA hi nò vayaktama iyaM samRddhA; muktAna hi pArthAJa zRNumò 'ganidAhAta || 1-185-12 ||

'The skill with which that youth shot down the mark, the strength with which he strung the bow, and the manner in which we heard them conversing among themselves all conclusively prove, O king, that they are indeed the sons of Pritha, disguised and wandering.' ।। 1-185-13 ।।

yathA hi lakSyaM nihataM dhanuza ca; sajyaM kRtaM tena tathA parasahya yathA ca bhASanti parasparaM te; channA dharuvaM te paracaranti pArthAH || 1-185-13 ||

'Hearing these words from his son, King Drupada became exceedingly glad. He sent his priest to them with instructions to ascertain their identities and determine whether they were indeed the illustrious sons of Pandu.' ।। 1-185-14 ।।

tataH sa rAjA darupadaH parahRSTaH; puròhitaM pareSayAM tatra cakre vidyAma yuSmAna iti bhASamANò; mahAtmanaH pANDusutAH satha kaca cita || 1-185-14 ||

'Taking the king's words to heart, the priest went to them and, after praising their achievements, delivered the entire message of the king. He spoke to them fully and respectfully, following the proper protocol.' ।। 1-185-15 ।।
