किं तवं साक्षाद धनुर्वेदॊ रामॊ वा विप्र सत्तम अथ साक्षाद धरि हयः साक्षाद वा विष्णुर अच्युतः ।। १-१८१-१६ ।।

sanskrit

'Are you the embodiment of the science of weapons, or are you Rama, the best of Brahmanas? Or are you Indra himself, or his younger brother Vishnu, also known as Achyuta, who has disguised himself as a Brahmana and, with such formidable strength, now fights against me?' ।। 1-181-16 ।।

english translation

kiM tavaM sAkSAda dhanurvedò rAmò vA vipra sattama atha sAkSAda dhari hayaH sAkSAda vA viSNura acyutaH || 1-181-16 ||

'For the sake of concealing your true identity, you have assumed the form of a Brahmana, relying on your mighty arms. Therefore, you now engage me in combat.' ।। 1-181-17 ।।

'No one else, except the husband of Sachi (Indra) or Arjuna, the son of Pandu and wearer of the diadem, is capable of facing me in battle when I am enraged.' ।। 1-181-18 ।।

'Upon hearing those words, Phalguna responded, saying, "O Karna, I am neither the personification of the science of arms, nor am I Rama endowed with superhuman powers. I am simply a Brahmana who excels among all warriors and wielders of weapons."' ।। 1-181-19 ।।

[vai] tama evaM vAdinaM tatra phalgunaH paratyabhASata nAsmi karNa dhanurvedò nAsmi rAmaH paratApavAna barAhmaNò 'sami yudhAM zareSThaH sarvazastrabhRtAM varaH || 1-181-19 ||

'On the command of the guru, steadfast in the scriptures of the supreme Lord, Today in battle to conquer you, I stand unwavering, O hero!' ।। 1-181-20 ।।
