दैवे पुरुषकारे च लॊकॊ ऽयं हि परतिष्ठितः तत्र दैवं तु विधिना कालयुक्तेन लभ्यते ॥ १-११४-१६ ॥
'In both divine providence and human effort, this world is indeed established. In this regard, divine grace is obtained through destiny and time.' ॥ 1-114-16 ॥
english translation
daive puruSakAre ca lòkò 'yaM hi paratiSThitaH tatra daivaM tu vidhinA kAlayuktena labhyate ॥ 1-114-16 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptइन्द्रॊ हि राजा देवानां परधान इति नः शरुतम अप्रमेयबलॊत्साहॊ वीर्यवान अमितद्युतिः ॥ १-११४-१७ ॥
'We have heard that Indra is the king of the gods and their chief. He is of immeasurable strength, unparalleled courage, and boundless radiance.' ॥ 1-114-17 ॥
english translation
indrò hi rAjA devAnAM paradhAna iti naH zarutama aprameyabalòtsAhò vIryavAna amitadyutiH ॥ 1-114-17 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतं तॊषयित्वा तपसा पुत्रं लप्स्ये महाबलम यं दास्यति स मे पुत्रं स वरीयान भविष्यति कर्मणा मनसा वाचा तस्मात तप्स्ये महत तपः ॥ १-११४-१८ ॥
'I shall please him through my asceticism and obtain from him a son of immense strength. Indeed, the son bestowed upon me by him must surpass all others and possess the ability to conquer in battle both men and beings beyond men. Thus, I shall engage in the most rigorous austerities, through actions, thoughts, and words.' ॥ 1-114-18 ॥

taM tòSayitvA tapasA putraM lapsye mahAbalama yaM dAsyati sa me putraM sa varIyAna bhaviSyati karmaNA manasA vAcA tasmAta tapsye mahata tapaH ॥ 1-114-18 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptततः पाण्डुर महातेजा मन्त्रयित्वा महर्षिभिः दिदेश कुन्त्याः कौरव्यॊ वरतं साम्वत्सरं शुभम ॥ १-११४-१९ ॥
'Thereafter, the greatly resplendent Pandu consulted with the great sages and bestowed upon Kunti the boon of a prosperous and auspicious year.' ॥ 1-114-19 ॥

tataH pANDura mahAtejA mantrayitvA maharSibhiH dideza kuntyAH kauravyò varataM sAmvatsaraM zubhama ॥ 1-114-19 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptआत्मना च महाबाहुर एकपादस्थितॊ ऽभवत उग्रं स तप आतस्थे परमेण समाधिना ॥ १-११४-२० ॥
'Meanwhile, he himself, O Bharata, began to stand on one leg from morning till evening and undertook other rigorous penances, with his mind absorbed in meditation, to please the lord of the celestials.' ॥ 1-114-20 ॥
