य इमं शुचिर अध्यायं पठेत पर्वणि पर्वणि अधीतं भारतं तेन कृत्स्नं सयाद इति मे मतिः ।। १-१-२०६ ।।

'One who reads this pure chapter on each occasion during the course of events and has studied the entire Mahabharata, in my opinion, becomes completely accomplished.'।। 1-1-206 ।।

english translation

ya imaM zucira adhyAyaM paTheta parvaNi parvaNi adhItaM bhArataM tena kRtsnaM sayAda iti me matiH || 1-1-206 ||

यश चेमं शृणुयान नित्यम आर्षं शरद्धासमन्वितः स दीर्घम आयुः कीर्तिं च सवर्गतिं चाप्नुयान नरः ।। १-१-२०७ ।।

'Such a devoted reader, honoring this sacred text regularly, not only gains longevity but also attains fame, eventually ascending to heavenly realms.' ।। 1-1-207 ।।

english translation

yaza cemaM zRNuyAna nityama ArSaM zaraddhAsamanvitaH sa dIrghama AyuH kIrtiM ca savargatiM cApnuyAna naraH || 1-1-207 ||

चत्वार एकतॊ वेदा भारतं चैकम एकतः समागतैः सुरर्षिभिस तुलाम आरॊपितं पुरा महत्त्वे च गुरुत्वे च धरियमाणं ततॊ ऽधिकम ।। १-१-२०८ ।।

'Four Vedas have converged into one, and similarly, the diverse narratives of the Mahabharata have merged into one. It was earlier weighed by the celestial sages using scales, symbolizing its immense significance and authority, and since then, it has been held even more profoundly in greatness and importance.'।। 1-1-208 ।।

english translation

catvAra ekatò vedA bhArataM caikama ekataH samAgataiH surarSibhisa tulAma AròpitaM purA mahattve ca gurutve ca dhariyamANaM tatò 'dhikama || 1-1-208 ||

महत्त्वाद भारवत्त्वाच च महाभारतम उच्यते निरुक्तम अस्य यॊ वेद सर्वपापैः परमुच्यते ।। १-१-२०९ ।।

'And as the latter weighed heavier than the four Vedas with their mysteries, from that period it hath been called in the world Mahabharata (the great Bharata).'।। 1-1-209 ।।

english translation

mahattvAda bhAravattvAca ca mahAbhAratama ucyate niruktama asya yò veda sarvapApaiH paramucyate || 1-1-209 ||

तपॊ न कल्कॊ ऽधययनं न कल्कः; सवाभाविकॊ वेद विधिर न कल्कः परसह्य वित्ताहरणं न कल्कस; तान्य एव भावॊपहतानि कल्कः ।। १-१-२१० ।।

'Austerities are inherently pure, learning is inherently benign, and the Vedic regulations intended for all castes are inherently innocent. Likewise, the pursuit of wealth through diligence is inherently harmless. It is only when these practices are misused and distorted that they transform into sources of harm.'।। 1-1-210 ।।

tapò na kalkò 'dhayayanaM na kalkaH; savAbhAvikò veda vidhira na kalkaH parasahya vittAharaNaM na kalkasa; tAnya eva bhAvòpahatAni kalkaH || 1-1-210 ||
