अयं शांतनवः सत्यं पालयन सत्यविक्रमः बुद्धिं न कुरुते ऽपत्ये तथा राज्यानुशासने ॥ १-९९-३१ ॥
'I cannot speak for your thoughts, but this is my perspective, O son. Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, committed to truth, does not desire children or kingdom for the sake of upholding truth.' ॥ 1-99-31 ॥
english translation
स तवं वयपेक्षया भरातुः संतानाय कुलस्य च भीष्मस्य चास्य वचनान नियॊगाच च ममानघ ॥ १-९९-३२ ॥
'For the love of your brother Vichitravirya, for the continuation of our lineage, by Bhishma's request and my directive, out of compassion for all beings, for the safeguarding of our subjects, and from the generosity of your noble heart, O virtuous one.' ॥ 1-99-32 ॥

अनुक्रॊशाच च भूतानां सर्वेषां रक्षणाय च आनृशंस्येन यद बरूयां तच छरुत्वा कर्तुम अर्हसि ॥ १-९९-३३ ॥
'Furthermore, for the welfare of all beings, for the protection of all, and with the intention of speaking without harshness, you should listen to what I have to say and act accordingly.' ॥ 1-99-33 ॥

यवीयसस तव भरातुर भार्ये सुरसुतॊपमे रूपयौवन संपन्ने पुत्र कामे च धर्मतः ॥ १-९९-३४ ॥
'You must heed my words. Your younger brother has left behind two widows, comparable in their beauty to celestial maidens, youthful and exceedingly beautiful. Out of a commitment to virtue and religious duty, they wish to bear children.' ॥ 1-99-34 ॥

तयॊर उत्पादयापत्यं समर्थॊ हय असि पुत्रक अनुरूपं कुलस्यास्य संतत्याः परसवस्य च ॥ १-९९-३५ ॥
'You are the most suitable to undertake this task. Hence, it is upon you to father children who will be worthy bearers of our lineage and ensure its continuity.' ॥ 1-99-35 ॥
