[व] ततः सत्यवती दीना कृपणा पुत्रगृद्धिनी पुत्रस्य कृत्वा कार्याणि सनुषाभ्यां सह भारत ॥ १-९७-१ ॥
'Vaisampayana said, 'The unfortunate Satyavati then became plunged in grief on account of her son. And after performing with her daughters-in-law the funeral rites of the deceased, consoled, as best she could, her weeping daughters-in-law and Bhishma, that foremost of all wielders of weapons.' ॥ 1-97-1 ॥
english translation
[va] tataH satyavatI dInA kRpaNA putragRddhinI putrasya kRtvA kAryANi sanuSAbhyAM saha bhArata ॥ 1-97-1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptधर्मं च पितृवंशं च मातृवंशं च मानिनी परसमीक्ष्य महाभागा गाङ्गेयं वाक्यम अब्रवीत ॥ १-९७-२ ॥
'Considering duty, paternal lineage, and maternal lineage, the illustrious Satyavati, with due reflection, spoke these words of Gangaputra.' ॥ 1-97-2 ॥

dharmaM ca pitRvaMzaM ca mAtRvaMzaM ca mAninI parasamIkSya mahAbhAgA gAGgeyaM vAkyama abravIta ॥ 1-97-2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptशंतनॊर धर्मनित्यस्य कौरव्यस्य यशस्विनः तवयि पिण्डश च कीर्तिश च संतानं च परतिष्ठितम ॥ १-९७-३ ॥
'The continuation of the lineage, the achievements, and the rites for the departed for the virtuous and renowned Santanu of the Kuru dynasty now all rest upon you.' ॥ 1-97-3 ॥

zaMtanòra dharmanityasya kauravyasya yazasvinaH tavayi piNDaza ca kIrtiza ca saMtAnaM ca paratiSThitama ॥ 1-97-3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptयथा कर्म शुभं कृत्वा सवर्गॊपगमनं धरुवम यथा चायुर धरुवं सत्ये तवयि धर्मस तथा धरुवः ॥ १-९७-४ ॥
'Just as the attainment of heaven is inseparable from good deeds, just as longevity is inseparable from truth and faith, so too is virtue inseparable from you.' ॥ 1-97-4 ॥

yathA karma zubhaM kRtvA savargòpagamanaM dharuvama yathA cAyura dharuvaM satye tavayi dharmasa tathA dharuvaH ॥ 1-97-4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptवेत्थ धर्मांश च धर्मज्ञ समासेनेतरेण च विविधास तवं शरुतीर वेत्थ वेत्थ वेदांश च सर्वशः ॥ १-९७-५ ॥
'O virtuous one, you possess a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of righteousness, are well-versed in diverse sacred texts, and have thorough knowledge of all the Vedas' branches.' ॥ 1-97-5 ॥

vettha dharmAMza ca dharmajJa samAsenetareNa ca vividhAsa tavaM zarutIra vettha vettha vedAMza ca sarvazaH ॥ 1-97-5 ॥
