स चाश्वि रूपसदृशॊ देव सत्त्वपराक्रमः सर्वासाम एव नारीणां चित्तप्रमथनॊ ऽभवत ।। १-९६-५६ ।।

sanskrit

'And Vichitravirya also, endued with the prowess of the celestials and the beauty of the twin Aswins, could steal the heart of any beautiful woman.' ।। 1-96-56 ।।

english translation

sa cAzvi rUpasadRzò deva sattvaparAkramaH sarvAsAma eva nArINAM cittapramathanò 'bhavata || 1-96-56 ||

hk transliteration

ताभ्यां सह समाः सप्त विहरन पृथिवीपतिः विचित्रवीर्यस तरुणॊ यक्ष्माणं समपद्यत ।। १-९६-५७ ।।

sanskrit

'The prince spent seven uninterrupted years in the company of his wives. However, while still in the prime of his youth, he was afflicted with tuberculosis.' ।। 1-96-57 ।।

english translation

tAbhyAM saha samAH sapta viharana pRthivIpatiH vicitravIryasa taruNò yakSmANaM samapadyata || 1-96-57 ||

hk transliteration

सुहृदां यतमानानाम आप्तैः सह चिकित्सकैः जगामास्तम इवादित्यः कौरव्यॊ यमसादनम ।। १-९६-५८ ।।

sanskrit

'Friends and relatives in consultation with one another tried to effect a cure. But despite all efforts, the Kuru prince died, setting like the evening sun.' ।। 1-96-58 ।।

english translation

suhRdAM yatamAnAnAma AptaiH saha cikitsakaiH jagAmAstama ivAdityaH kauravyò yamasAdanama || 1-96-58 ||

परेतकार्याणि सर्वाणि तस्य सम्यग अकारयत राज्ञॊ विचित्रवीर्यस्य सत्यवत्या मते सथितः ऋत्विग्भिः सहितॊ भीष्मः सर्वैश च कुरुपुंगवैः ।। १-९६-५९ ।।

sanskrit

'Then, the virtuous Bhishma, engulfed in sorrow and worry, consulted with Satyavati and ensured that learned priests and members of the Kuru dynasty meticulously conducted the funeral ceremonies of the departed.' ।। 1-96-59 ।।

paretakAryANi sarvANi tasya samyaga akArayata rAjJò vicitravIryasya satyavatyA mate sathitaH RtvigbhiH sahitò bhISmaH sarvaiza ca kurupuMgavaiH || 1-96-59 ||
