स विनिश्चित्य धर्मज्ञॊ बराह्मणैर वेदपारगैः अनुजज्ञे तदा जयेष्टाम अम्बां काशिपतेः सुताम ।। १-९६-५१ ।।

sanskrit

'Having deliberated and in consultation with Brahmanas well-versed in the Vedas, the wise Bhishma then permitted Amba, the eldest daughter of the king of Kasi, to leave.' ।। 1-96-51 ।।

english translation

sa vinizcitya dharmajJò barAhmaNaira vedapAragaiH anujajJe tadA jayeSTAma ambAM kAzipateH sutAma || 1-96-51 ||

hk transliteration

अम्बिकाम्बालिके भार्ये परादाद भरात्रे यवीयसे भीष्मॊ विचित्रवीर्याय विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ।। १-९६-५२ ।।

sanskrit

'But he bestowed with due rites the two other daughters, Ambika and Ambalika on his younger brother Vichitravirya.' ।। 1-96-52 ।।

english translation

ambikAmbAlike bhArye parAdAda bharAtre yavIyase bhISmò vicitravIryAya vidhidRSTena karmaNA || 1-96-52 ||

hk transliteration

तयॊः पाणिं गृहीत्वा स रूपयौवन दर्पितः विचित्रवीर्यॊ धर्मात्मा कामात्मा समपद्यत ।। १-९६-५३ ।।

sanskrit

'And though Vichitravirya was virtuous and abstemious, yet, proud of youth and beauty, he soon became lustful after his marriage.' ।। 1-96-53 ।।

english translation

tayòH pANiM gRhItvA sa rUpayauvana darpitaH vicitravIryò dharmAtmA kAmAtmA samapadyata || 1-96-53 ||

hk transliteration

ते चापि बृहती शयामे नीलकुञ्चित मूर्धजे रक्ततुङ्ग नखॊपेते पीनश्रेणि पयॊधरे ।। १-९६-५४ ।।

sanskrit

'And both Ambika and Ambalika were tall and of the complexion of molten gold. And their heads were covered with black curly hair and their finger-nails were high and red;' ।। 1-96-54 ।।

english translation

te cApi bRhatI zayAme nIlakuJcita mUrdhaje raktatuGga nakhòpete pInazreNi payòdhare || 1-96-54 ||

hk transliteration

आत्मनः परतिरूपॊ ऽसौ लब्धः पतिर इति सथिते विचित्रवीर्यं कल्याणं पूजयाम आसतुस तु ते ।। १-९६-५५ ।।

sanskrit

'And endued with every auspicious mark, the amiable young ladies considered themselves to be wedded to a husband who was every way worthy of themselves, and extremely loved and respected Vichitravirya.' ।। 1-96-55 ।।

english translation

AtmanaH paratirUpò 'sau labdhaH patira iti sathite vicitravIryaM kalyANaM pUjayAma Asatusa tu te || 1-96-55 ||
