सवयंवरं तु राजन्याः परशंसन्त्य उपयान्ति च परमथ्य तु हृताम आहुर जयायसीं धर्मवादिनः ॥ १-९६-११ ॥
'Nobles highly regard and attend the Swayamvara, while the advocates of Dharma consider winning a bride through competition to be the most honorable.' ॥ 1-96-11 ॥
english translation
savayaMvaraM tu rAjanyAH parazaMsantya upayAnti ca paramathya tu hRtAma Ahura jayAyasIM dharmavAdinaH ॥ 1-96-11 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptता इमाः पृथिवीपाला जिहीर्षामि बलाद इतः ते यतध्वं परं शक्त्या विजयायेतराय वा सथितॊ ऽहं पृथिवीपाला युद्धाय कृतनिश्चयः ॥ १-९६-१२ ॥
'Therefore, O monarchs, I intend to take these maidens by force. Exert yourselves to your utmost ability either to defeat me or to be defeated in the attempt.' ॥ 1-96-12 ॥
english translation
tA imAH pRthivIpAlA jihIrSAmi balAda itaH te yatadhvaM paraM zaktyA vijayAyetarAya vA sathitò 'haM pRthivIpAlA yuddhAya kRtanizcayaH ॥ 1-96-12 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptएवम उक्त्वा महीपालान काशिराजं च वीर्यवान सर्वाः कन्याः स कौरव्यॊ रथम आरॊपयत सवकम आमन्त्र्य च स तान परायाच छीघ्रं कन्याः परगृह्य ताः ॥ १-९६-१३ ॥
'Having thus spoken to all the kings, including the valorous king of Kashi, Bhishma mounted his chariot along with all the maidens and quickly departed. He also invited those kings, and having obtained their consent, he took the maidens away.' ॥ 1-96-13 ॥

evama uktvA mahIpAlAna kAzirAjaM ca vIryavAna sarvAH kanyAH sa kauravyò rathama Aròpayata savakama Amantrya ca sa tAna parAyAca chIghraM kanyAH paragRhya tAH ॥ 1-96-13 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptततस ते पार्थिवाः सर्वे समुत्पेतुर अमर्षिताः संस्पृशन्तः सवकान बाहून दशन्तॊ दशनच छदान ॥ १-९६-१४ ॥
'The challenged monarchs rose to their feet, striking their arms and gnashing their teeth angrily.' ॥ 1-96-14 ॥

tatasa te pArthivAH sarve samutpetura amarSitAH saMspRzantaH savakAna bAhUna dazantò dazanaca chadAna ॥ 1-96-14 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतेषाम आभरणान्य आशु तवरितानां विमुञ्चताम आमुञ्चतां च वर्माणि संभ्रमः सुमहान अभूत ॥ १-९६-१५ ॥
'Amidst the rush, a loud clamor arose as they hastily discarded their ornaments and donned their armor.' ॥ 1-96-15 ॥
