कीर्त्यमानेषु राज्ञां तु नामस्व अथ सहस्रशः भीष्मः सवयं तदा राजन वरयाम आस ताः परभुः ।। १-९६-६ ।।

sanskrit

'While the names of the kings were being announced by the thousands, O King, Bhishma himself then chose those maidens as the lord.' ।। 1-96-6 ।।

english translation

kIrtyamAneSu rAjJAM tu nAmasva atha sahasrazaH bhISmaH savayaM tadA rAjana varayAma Asa tAH parabhuH || 1-96-6 ||

'Bhishma, the best of men, with a voice as deep as a raincloud, then spoke to the kings. He mounted his chariot and abducted those maidens.' ।। 1-96-7 ।।

आहूय दानं कन्यानां गुणवद्भ्यः समृतं बुधैः अलंकृत्य यथाशक्ति परदाय च धनान्य अपि ।। १-९६-८ ।।

'Summoning the virtuous and wise men, Bhishma arranged for the marriages of the maidens, bestowing upon them gifts in accordance with their virtues, and also gave away wealth as much as possible.' ।। 1-96-8 ।।

AhUya dAnaM kanyAnAM guNavadbhyaH samRtaM budhaiH alaMkRtya yathAzakti paradAya ca dhanAnya api || 1-96-8 ||

परयच्छन्त्य अपरे कन्यां मिथुनेन गवाम अपि वित्तेन कथितेनान्ये बलेनान्ये ऽनुमान्य च ।। १-९६-९ ।।

'Some wed with the consent of the maidens, some by drugging them into consent, and some by going unto the maidens' parents and obtaining their sanction.' ।। 1-96-9 ।।
