[व] तथेत्य उक्त्वा तु सा राजंस तत्रैवान्तरधीयत पुत्र जन्म परतीक्षंस तु स राजा तद अधारयत ॥ १-९२-१६ ॥

'Vaisampayana continued, 'O king, having said so, the celestial damsel disappeared then and there. And the king, too, waited for the birth of his son to fulfill his promise.' ॥ 1-92-16 ॥

english translation

[va] tathetya uktvA tu sA rAjaMsa tatraivAntaradhIyata putra janma paratIkSaMsa tu sa rAjA tada adhArayata ॥ 1-92-16 ॥

एतस्मिन्न एव काले तु परतीपः कषत्रियर्षभः तपस तेपे सुतस्यार्थे सभार्यः कुरुनन्दन ॥ १-९२-१७ ॥

'About this time Pratipa, that light of the Kuru race, that bull amongst Kshatriyas, was engaged, along with his wife, in austerities from the desire of offspring.' ॥ 1-92-17 ॥

etasminna eva kAle tu paratIpaH kaSatriyarSabhaH tapasa tepe sutasyArthe sabhAryaH kurunandana ॥ 1-92-17 ॥

तयॊः समभवत पुत्रॊ वृद्धयॊः स महाभिषः शान्तस्य जज्ञे संतानस तस्माद आसीत स शंतनुः ॥ १-९२-१८ ॥

'From them, an illustrious son was born in their old age. He was the progeny of Shantanu, born of Shanti, and therefore, he was named Shantanu.' ॥ 1-92-18 ॥

tayòH samabhavata putrò vRddhayòH sa mahAbhiSaH zAntasya jajJe saMtAnasa tasmAda AsIta sa zaMtanuH ॥ 1-92-18 ॥

संस्मरंश चाक्षयाँल लॊकान विजितान सवेन कर्मणा पुण्यकर्मकृद एवासीच छंतनुः कुरु सत्तम ॥ १-९२-१९ ॥

'Remembering his past lives and having conquered all the worlds through his actions, Shantanu, the noblest of the Kurus, remained steadfast in performing virtuous deeds.' ॥ 1-92-19 ॥

saMsmaraMza cAkSayA~la lòkAna vijitAna savena karmaNA puNyakarmakRda evAsIca chaMtanuH kuru sattama ॥ 1-92-19 ॥

परतीपः शंतनुं पुत्रं यौवनस्थं ततॊ ऽनवशात पुरा मां सत्री समभ्यागाच छंतनॊ भूतये तव ॥ १-९२-२० ॥

'When Shantanu reached his youth, Pratipa spoke to him, saying, 'O Shantanu, a celestial maiden once approached me for your benefit. Should you encounter this fair lady in solitude, and she desires offspring from you, then welcome her as your spouse.' ॥ 1-92-20 ॥
