एतद दृष्टं भविष्ये हि रुरॊर उत्तमतेजसः आयुषॊ ऽतिप्रवृद्धस्य भार्यार्थे ऽरधं हरसत्व इति ॥ १-९-१६ ॥

'This bestowal by Ruru of a moiety of his span of life to resuscitate his bride afterward led, as it would be seen, to a curtailment of Ruru's life.'॥ 1-9-16 ॥

english translation

etada dRSTaM bhaviSye hi ruròra uttamatejasaH AyuSò 'tipravRddhasya bhAryArthe 'radhaM harasatva iti ॥ 1-9-16 ॥

तत इष्टे ऽहनि तयॊः पितरौ चक्रतुर मुदा विवाहं तौ च रेमाते परस्परहितैषिणौ ॥ १-९-१७ ॥

'And on an auspicious day, their fathers gladly married them with due rites. And the couple passed their days, devoted to each other.'॥ 1-9-17 ॥

english translation

tata iSTe 'hani tayòH pitarau cakratura mudA vivAhaM tau ca remAte parasparahitaiSiNau ॥ 1-9-17 ॥

स लब्ध्वा दुर्लभां भार्यां पद्मकिञ्जल्क सप्रभाम वरतं चक्रे विनाशाय जिह्मगानां धृतव्रतः ॥ १-९-१८ ॥

'And Ruru having obtained such a wife, as is hard to be found, beautiful and bright as the filaments of the lotus, made a vow for the destruction of the serpent race.'॥ 1-9-18 ॥

english translation

sa labdhvA durlabhAM bhAryAM padmakiJjalka saprabhAma varataM cakre vinAzAya jihmagAnAM dhRtavrataH ॥ 1-9-18 ॥

स दृष्ट्वा जिह्मगान सर्वांस तीव्रकॊपसमन्वितः अभिहन्ति यथासन्नं गृह्य परहरणं सदा ॥ १-९-१९ ॥

'And whenever he saw a serpent he became filled with great wrath and always killed it with a weapon.'॥ 1-9-19 ॥

english translation

sa dRSTvA jihmagAna sarvAMsa tIvrakòpasamanvitaH abhihanti yathAsannaM gRhya paraharaNaM sadA ॥ 1-9-19 ॥

स कदा चिद वनं विप्रॊ रुरुर अभ्यागमन महत शयानं तत्र चापश्यड डुण्डुभं वयसान्वितम ॥ १-९-२० ॥

'One day, O Brahmana, Ruru ventured into a vast forest, where he came across an ancient serpent of the Dundubha species, lying sprawled on the ground.'॥ 1-9-20 ॥

sa kadA cida vanaM viprò rurura abhyAgamana mahata zayAnaM tatra cApazyaDa DuNDubhaM vayasAnvitama ॥ 1-9-20 ॥
