[व] ते ऽधिरुह्य रथान सर्वे परयाता नृपसत्तमाः आक्रमन्तॊ दिवं भाभिर धर्मेणावृत्य रॊदसी ।। १-८८-१६ ।।

sanskrit

'Vaisampayana continued, 'Then all those excellent monarchs riding in those cars set out for heaven for gaining admittance into it, illuminating the whole firmament by the glory of their virtues.'' ।। 1-88-16 ।।

english translation

[va] te 'dhiruhya rathAna sarve parayAtA nRpasattamAH Akramantò divaM bhAbhira dharmeNAvRtya ròdasI || 1-88-16 ||

hk transliteration

[आ] अहं मन्ये पूर्वम एकॊ ऽसमि गन्ता; सखा चेन्द्रः सर्वथा मे महात्मा कस्माद एवं शिबिर औशीनरॊ ऽयम; एकॊ ऽतयगात सर्ववेगेन वाहान ।। १-८८-१७ ।।

sanskrit

'Ashtaka, breaking the silence, questioned, "I had always considered Indra as my particular ally, believing that I would be the first to gain entry into heaven. However, how has it come to pass that Sivi, the son of Usinara, has already surpassed us?"' ।। 1-88-17 ।।

english translation

[A] ahaM manye pUrvama ekò 'sami gantA; sakhA cendraH sarvathA me mahAtmA kasmAda evaM zibira auzInarò 'yama; ekò 'tayagAta sarvavegena vAhAna || 1-88-17 ||

hk transliteration

[य] अददाद देव यानाय यावद वित्तम अविन्दत उशीनरस्य पुत्रॊ ऽयं तस्माच छरेष्ठॊ हि नः शिबिः ।। १-८८-१८ ।।

sanskrit

'Yayati replied, "Usinara's son, Sivi, had relinquished all his possessions to attain the realm of Brahman. Hence, he stands as the foremost among us. Moreover, Siva's generosity, asceticism, truthfulness, righteousness, humility, forgiveness, friendliness, and eagerness to perform virtuous deeds have been unparalleled, beyond measure."' ।। 1-88-18 ।।

english translation

[ya] adadAda deva yAnAya yAvada vittama avindata uzInarasya putrò 'yaM tasmAca chareSThò hi naH zibiH || 1-88-18 ||

hk transliteration

दानं तपः सत्यम अथापि धर्मॊ हरीः; शरीः कषमा सौम्य तथा तितिक्षा राजन्न एतान्य अप्रतिमस्य राज्ञः; शिबेः सथितान्य अनृशंसस्य बुद्ध्या एवंवृत्तॊ हरीनिषेधश च यस्मात; तस्माच छिबिर अत्यगाद वै रथेन ।। १-८८-१९ ।।

sanskrit

'Yayati elaborates, "Generosity, ascetic practices, truth, righteousness, beauty, forgiveness, gentleness, and endurance—these unparalleled virtues resided in King Sivi, known for his compassion. Because he adhered to these virtues and his prohibition against harming others, Sivi ascended swiftly in his chariot."' ।। 1-88-19 ।।

english translation

dAnaM tapaH satyama athApi dharmò harIH; zarIH kaSamA saumya tathA titikSA rAjanna etAnya apratimasya rAjJaH; zibeH sathitAnya anRzaMsasya buddhyA evaMvRttò harIniSedhaza ca yasmAta; tasmAca chibira atyagAda vai rathena || 1-88-19 ||

hk transliteration

[व] अथाष्टकः पुनर एवान्वपृच्छन; मातामहं कौतुकाद इन्द्रकल्पम पृच्छामि तवां नृपते बरूहि सत्यं; कुतश च कस्यासि सुतश च कस्य कृतं तवया यद धि न तस्य कर्ता; लॊके तवदन्यः कषत्रियॊ बराह्मणॊ वा ।। १-८८-२० ।।

sanskrit

'Vaisampayana narrated further, "Driven by curiosity, Ashtaka once more addressed his question to his grandfather, who was as glorious as Indra himself, inquiring, 'O sovereign, I beseech you to disclose the truth to me. From whence do you hail, who exactly are you, and of whom are you a progeny? On earth, is there any Brahmin or Kshatriya besides yourself who has accomplished what you have?"' ।। 1-88-20 ।।

english translation

[va] athASTakaH punara evAnvapRcchana; mAtAmahaM kautukAda indrakalpama pRcchAmi tavAM nRpate barUhi satyaM; kutaza ca kasyAsi sutaza ca kasya kRtaM tavayA yada dhi na tasya kartA; lòke tavadanyaH kaSatriyò barAhmaNò vA || 1-88-20 ||
