इत्य उक्त्वा सहितास ते तु राजानम उपचक्रमुः नाभ्यनन्दत तान राजा देव यान्यास तदान्तिके रुदन्तस ते ऽथ शर्मिष्ठाम अभ्ययुर बालकास ततः ।। १-७८-१६ ।।

sanskrit

'After speaking thus, the children approached the king to embrace his knees. However, the king refrained from touching them in Devayani's presence. Disheartened, the boys then departed and headed towards their mother, shedding tears of sorrow.' ।। 1-78-16 ।।

english translation

itya uktvA sahitAsa te tu rAjAnama upacakramuH nAbhyanandata tAna rAjA deva yAnyAsa tadAntike rudantasa te 'tha zarmiSThAma abhyayura bAlakAsa tataH || 1-78-16 ||

hk transliteration

दृष्ट्वा तु तेषां बालानां परणयं पार्थिवं परति बुद्ध्वा च तत्त्वतॊ देवी शर्मिष्ठाम इदम अब्रवीत ।। १-७८-१७ ।।

sanskrit

'Upon witnessing the boys' behavior, the king felt deeply embarrassed. However, Devayani, noticing the fondness the children had for the king, discerned the secret and spoke to Sarmishtha.' ।। 1-78-17 ।।

english translation

dRSTvA tu teSAM bAlAnAM paraNayaM pArthivaM parati buddhvA ca tattvatò devI zarmiSThAma idama abravIta || 1-78-17 ||

hk transliteration

मदधीना सती कस्माद अकार्षीर विप्रियं मम तम एवासुरधर्मं तवम आस्थिता न बिभेषि किम ।। १-७८-१८ ।।

sanskrit

'He said, "How dare you harm me when you depend on me? Aren't you afraid to revert to your demon ways again?"' ।। 1-78-18 ।।

english translation

madadhInA satI kasmAda akArSIra vipriyaM mama tama evAsuradharmaM tavama AsthitA na bibheSi kima || 1-78-18 ||

hk transliteration

[ष] यद उक्तम ऋषिर इत्य एव तत सत्यं चारुहासिनि नयायतॊ धर्मतश चैव चरन्ती न बिभेमि ते ।। १-७८-१९ ।।

sanskrit

'Sarmishtha replied, "O one with a sweet smile, everything I said about the sage is completely true. I have acted rightly and by virtuous principles, hence I do not fear you."' ।। 1-78-19 ।।

english translation

[Sa] yada uktama RSira itya eva tata satyaM cAruhAsini nayAyatò dharmataza caiva carantI na bibhemi te || 1-78-19 ||

hk transliteration

यदा तवया वृतॊ राजा वृत एव तदा मया सखी भर्ता हि धर्मेण भर्ता भवति शॊभने ।। १-७८-२० ।।

sanskrit

'When your conduct, O king, is just, then indeed, by me, your wife, your friend, your husband becomes adorned with righteousness.' ।। 1-78-20 ।।

english translation

yadA tavayA vRtò rAjA vRta eva tadA mayA sakhI bhartA hi dharmeNa bhartA bhavati zòbhane || 1-78-20 ||
