[षर] न नर्म युक्तं वचनं हिनस्ति; न सत्रीषु राजन न विवाह काले पराणात्यये सर्वधनापहारे; पञ्चानृतान्य आहुर अपातकानि ॥ १-७७-१६ ॥
'Sarmishtha then articulated, "It is acknowledged, O King, that falsehoods are not deemed sinful in instances of jesting, concerning women to be united with, during matrimonial ceremonies, when faced with imminent death, and upon the potential forfeiture of one's entire wealth. On these five occasions, lying is considered pardonable."' ॥ 1-77-16 ॥

पृष्टं तु साक्ष्ये परवदन्तम अन्यथा; वदन्ति मिथ्यॊपहितं नरेन्द्र एकार्थतायां तु समाहितायां; मिथ्या वदन्तम अनृतं हिनस्ति ॥ १-७७-१७ ॥
'But, O King, when someone gives false testimony, being asked to bear witness, that falsehood is condemned by men. Likewise, speaking untruth with a deliberate intent to deceive in matters of importance is considered truly sinful.' ॥ 1-77-17 ॥

[य] राजा परमाणं भूतानां स नश्येत मृषा वदन अर्थकृच्छ्रम अपि पराप्य न मिथ्या कर्तुम उत्सहे ॥ १-७७-१८ ॥
'Yayati responded, "A king ought to stand as a paragon before his subjects. A monarch who indulges in falsehood is surely on the path to ruin. For my part, I cannot bring myself to utter falsehoods, not even when faced with the most severe adversities!"' ॥ 1-77-18 ॥

[षर] समाव एतौ मतौ राजन पतिः सख्याश च यः पतिः समं विवाहम इत्य आहुः सख्या मे ऽसि पतिर वृतः ॥ १-७७-१९ ॥
'Sarmishtha replied, "O monarch, one may regard her friend's husband as her own. One's friend's marriage is akin to one's own. You have been chosen by my friend as her husband."' ॥ 1-77-19 ॥

[य] दातव्यं याचमानेभ्य इति मे वरतम आहितम तवं च याचसि मां कामं बरूहि किं करवाणि ते ॥ १-७७-२० ॥
'Yayati then responded, "Indeed, it is my vow to always grant what is asked of me. As you ask, tell me then, what would you have me do?"' ॥ 1-77-20 ॥
