तम एकं रहिते दृष्ट्वा शर्मिष्ठा चारुहासिनी परत्युद्गम्याञ्जलिं कृत्वा राजानं वाक्यम अब्रवीत ॥ १-७७-११ ॥
'Observing the monarch standing before her without any witnesses around, Sarmishtha, her smile sweet, approached him and spoke with folded hands.' ॥ 1-77-11 ॥

tama ekaM rahite dRSTvA zarmiSThA cAruhAsinI paratyudgamyAJjaliM kRtvA rAjAnaM vAkyama abravIta ॥ 1-77-11 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptसॊमस्येन्द्रस्य विष्णॊर वा यमस्य वरुणस्य वा तव वा नाहुष कुले कः सत्रियं सप्रष्टुम अर्हसि ॥ १-७७-१२ ॥
'O king, whether you belong to the lineage of Soma, Indra, Vishnu, Yama, Varuna, or the dynasty of Nahusha, who among these worthy of respect deserves to question a woman like me?' ॥ 1-77-12 ॥

sòmasyendrasya viSNòra vA yamasya varuNasya vA tava vA nAhuSa kule kaH satriyaM sapraSTuma arhasi ॥ 1-77-12 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptरूपाभिजन शीलैर हि तवं राजन वेत्थ मां सदा सा तवां याचे परसाद्याहम ऋतुं देहि नराधिप ॥ १-७७-१३ ॥
'O king, it is by your appearance, lineage, and character that I recognize you always. Thus, seeking your favor, O ruler, I beseech you: grant me the privilege of bearing a child.' ॥ 1-77-13 ॥

rUpAbhijana zIlaira hi tavaM rAjana vettha mAM sadA sA tavAM yAce parasAdyAhama RtuM dehi narAdhipa ॥ 1-77-13 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscript[य] वेद्मि तवां शीलसंपन्नां दैत्य कन्याम अनिन्दिताम रूपे च ते न पश्यामि सूच्य अग्रम अपि निन्दितम ॥ १-७७-१४ ॥
'Yayati responded, 'I am well aware of the nobility of your birth, being born into the illustrious lineage of the Danavas. You are also endowed with beauty.' ॥ 1-77-14 ॥

[ya] vedmi tavAM zIlasaMpannAM daitya kanyAma aninditAma rUpe ca te na pazyAmi sUcya agrama api ninditama ॥ 1-77-14 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअब्रवीद उशना काव्यॊ देव यानीं यदावहम न यम आह्वयितव्या ते शयने वार्षपर्वणी ॥ १-७७-१५ ॥
'Indeed, I find not even the slightest fault in your features. However, Usanas, upon my union with Devayani, expressly forbade that the daughter of Vrishaparvan should ever be summoned to share my bed.' ॥ 1-77-15 ॥

abravIda uzanA kAvyò deva yAnIM yadAvahama na yama AhvayitavyA te zayane vArSaparvaNI ॥ 1-77-15 ॥
