गते वर्षसहस्रे तु शर्मिष्ठा वार्षपर्वणी ददर्श यौवनं पराप्ता ऋतुं सा चान्वचिन्तयत ॥ १-७७-६ ॥
'And when a thousand years had passed away, Vrishaparvan's daughter Sarmishtha having attained to puberty saw that her season had come.' ॥ 1-77-6 ॥
english translation
gate varSasahasre tu zarmiSThA vArSaparvaNI dadarza yauvanaM parAptA RtuM sA cAnvacintayata ॥ 1-77-6 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptऋतुकालश च संप्राप्तॊ न च मे ऽसति पतिर वृतः किं पराप्तं किं नु कर्तव्यं किं वा कृत्वा कृतं भवेत ॥ १-७७-७ ॥
'Upon the arrival of the mating season, she thought, "I have not chosen a husband. What has come to pass? What should be done now? Or what action can be taken that will be considered appropriate?"' ॥ 1-77-7 ॥
english translation
RtukAlaza ca saMprAptò na ca me 'sati patira vRtaH kiM parAptaM kiM nu kartavyaM kiM vA kRtvA kRtaM bhaveta ॥ 1-77-7 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptदेव यानी परजातासौ वृथाहं पराप्तयौवना यथा तया वृतॊ भर्ता तथैवाहं वृणॊमि तम ॥ १-७७-८ ॥
'Devayani, though of noble birth, has obtained a husband without effort. Just as she has chosen her spouse, I shall also choose mine similarly.' ॥ 1-77-8 ॥
english translation
deva yAnI parajAtAsau vRthAhaM parAptayauvanA yathA tayA vRtò bhartA tathaivAhaM vRNòmi tama ॥ 1-77-8 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptराज्ञा पुत्रफलं देयम इति मे निश्चिता मतिः अपीदानीं स धर्मात्मा इयान मे दर्शनं रहः ॥ १-७७-९ ॥
'I am resolved that the king should grant me the fruit of a son," she decided firmly. "Even now, may that virtuous soul come to me in secret for a meeting.' ॥ 1-77-9 ॥
english translation
rAjJA putraphalaM deyama iti me nizcitA matiH apIdAnIM sa dharmAtmA iyAna me darzanaM rahaH ॥ 1-77-9 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअथ निष्क्रम्य राजासौ तस्मिन काले यदृच्छया अशॊकवनिकाभ्याशे शर्मिष्ठां पराप्य विष्ठितः ॥ १-७७-१० ॥
'Vaisampayana continued, 'As Sarmishtha was absorbed in her thoughts, the king, wandering, happened upon the same grove of Asoka trees. Upon seeing Sarmishtha before him, he stood there silently.' ॥ 1-77-10 ॥

atha niSkramya rAjAsau tasmina kAle yadRcchayA azòkavanikAbhyAze zarmiSThAM parApya viSThitaH ॥ 1-77-10 ॥
