नेमां हिंस्युर वने बालां करव्यादा मांसगृद्धिनः पर्यरक्षन्त तां तत्र शकुन्ता मेनकात्मजाम ॥ १-६६-११ ॥

'The carnivorous creatures of the forest, greedy for flesh, would not harm the child. The birds, there, protected her, Menaka's daughter Shakuntala, vigilantly.' ॥ 1-66-11 ॥

english translation

nemAM hiMsyura vane bAlAM karavyAdA mAMsagRddhinaH paryarakSanta tAM tatra zakuntA menakAtmajAma ॥ 1-66-11 ॥

उपस्प्रष्टुं गतश चाहम अपश्यं शयिताम इमाम निर्जने विपिने ऽरण्ये शकुन्तैः परिवारिताम आनयित्वा ततश चैनां दुहितृत्वे नययॊजयम ॥ १-६६-१२ ॥

'I went there to perform my ablution and beheld the infant lying in the solitude of the wilderness surrounded by vultures. Bringing her hither I have made her my daughter.' ॥ 1-66-12 ॥

upaspraSTuM gataza cAhama apazyaM zayitAma imAma nirjane vipine 'raNye zakuntaiH parivAritAma AnayitvA tataza cainAM duhitRtve nayayòjayama ॥ 1-66-12 ॥

शरीरकृत पराणदाता यस्य चान्नानि भुञ्जते करमेण ते तरयॊ ऽपय उक्ताः पितरॊ धर्मनिश्चये ॥ १-६६-१३ ॥

'According to the scriptures, the creator of the body, the guardian of life, and the provider of sustenance are each considered fathers in their own right.' ॥ 1-66-13 ॥

zarIrakRta parANadAtA yasya cAnnAni bhuJjate karameNa te tarayò 'paya uktAH pitarò dharmanizcaye ॥ 1-66-13 ॥

निर्जने च वने यस्माच छकुन्तैः परिरक्षिता शकुन्तलेति नामास्याः कृतं चापि ततॊ मया ॥ १-६६-१४ ॥

'Given her unique circumstance of being safeguarded by birds in the wilderness's solitude, I have thus named her Sakuntala, symbolizing 'protected by birds.' ॥ 1-66-14 ॥

nirjane ca vane yasmAca chakuntaiH parirakSitA zakuntaleti nAmAsyAH kRtaM cApi tatò mayA ॥ 1-66-14 ॥

एवं दुहितरं विद्धि मम सौम्य शकुन्तलाम शकुन्तला च पितरं मन्यते माम अनिन्दिता ॥ १-६६-१५ ॥

'O Brahman, it is in this manner that Sakuntala has come to be recognized as my daughter. And the faultless Sakuntala, in turn, looks upon me as her father.' ॥ 1-66-15 ॥

evaM duhitaraM viddhi mama saumya zakuntalAma zakuntalA ca pitaraM manyate mAma aninditA ॥ 1-66-15 ॥
