तस्या रूपगुणं दृष्ट्वा स तु विप्रर्षभस तदा चकार भावं संसर्गे तया कामवशं गतः ।। १-६६-६ ।।

sanskrit

'Upon witnessing her beauty and virtues, the great sage, influenced by desire, developed an affectionate bond with her, succumbing to the force of passion.' ।। 1-66-6 ।।

english translation

tasyA rUpaguNaM dRSTvA sa tu viprarSabhasa tadA cakAra bhAvaM saMsarge tayA kAmavazaM gataH || 1-66-6 ||

hk transliteration

नयमन्त्रयत चाप्य एनां सा चाप्य ऐच्छद अनिन्दिता तौ तत्र सुचिरं कालं वने वयहरताम उभौ रममाणौ यथाकामं यथैक दिवसं तथा ।। १-६६-७ ।।

sanskrit

'Swept away by passion, the sage signaled his desire for her companionship. He extended his invitation, and she, of impeccable beauty, signaled her willingness to accept. Together, they spent a significant amount of time, reveling in each other's presence.' ।। 1-66-7 ।।

english translation

nayamantrayata cApya enAM sA cApya aicchada aninditA tau tatra suciraM kAlaM vane vayaharatAma ubhau ramamANau yathAkAmaM yathaika divasaM tathA || 1-66-7 ||

hk transliteration

जनयाम आस स मुनिर मेनकायां शकुन्तलाम परस्थे हिमवतॊ रम्ये मालिनीम अभितॊ नदीम ।। १-६६-८ ।।

sanskrit

'Indulging in playful companionship as they pleased, the sage and Menaka spent a considerable amount of time together, seemingly as if it were just a single day. During this period, the Rishi fathered a daughter named Sakuntala with Menaka.' ।। 1-66-8 ।।

janayAma Asa sa munira menakAyAM zakuntalAma parasthe himavatò ramye mAlinIma abhitò nadIma || 1-66-8 ||

जातम उत्सृज्य तं गर्भं मेनका मालिनीम अनु कृतकार्या ततस तूर्णम अगच्छच छक्र संसदम ।। १-६६-९ ।।

sanskrit

'And Menaka (as her conception advanced) went to the banks of the river Malini coursing along a valley of the charming mountains of Himavat.' ।। 1-66-9 ।।

english translation

jAtama utsRjya taM garbhaM menakA mAlinIma anu kRtakAryA tatasa tUrNama agacchaca chakra saMsadama || 1-66-9 ||

hk transliteration

तं वने विजने गर्भं सिंहव्याघ्र समाकुले दृष्ट्वा शयानं शकुनाः समन्तात पर्यवारयन ।। १-६६-१० ।।

sanskrit

'And there she gave birth to that daughter. And she left the newborn infant on the bank of that river and went away. And beholding the newborninfant lying in that forest destitute of human beings but abounding with lions and tigers, several vultures sat around to protect it from harm.' ।। 1-66-10 ।।

taM vane vijane garbhaM siMhavyAghra samAkule dRSTvA zayAnaM zakunAH samantAta paryavArayana || 1-66-10 ||
