स कदा चिद वनचरॊ मृगं विव्याध पत्रिणा विद्ध्वा चान्वसरत तूर्णं तं मृगं गहने वने ॥ १-४५-२१ ॥
'One day, going into the forest, he pierced a deer with an arrow. And having pierced it he followed it quickly on foot into the deep woods, armed with sword and quiver.' ॥ 1-45-21 ॥
english translation
sa kadA cida vanacarò mRgaM vivyAdha patriNA viddhvA cAnvasarata tUrNaM taM mRgaM gahane vane ॥ 1-45-21 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपदातिर बद्धनिस्त्रिंशस ततायुध कलापवान न चाससाद गहने मृगं नष्टं पिता तव ॥ १-४५-२२ ॥
'With thirty-two arrows sticking into its body, the deer, with quiver and bow in hand, was unable to seize the wounded creature in the dense forest, and thus your father lost the animal.' ॥ 1-45-22 ॥
english translation
padAtira baddhanistriMzasa tatAyudha kalApavAna na cAsasAda gahane mRgaM naSTaM pitA tava ॥ 1-45-22 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपरिश्रान्तॊ वयःस्थश च षष्टिवर्षॊ जरान्वितः कषुधितः स महारण्ये ददर्श मुनिम अन्तिके ॥ १-४५-२३ ॥
'Sixty years of age and decrepit, he was soon fatigued and became hungry. He then saw in the deep woods a high-souled Rishi (Sage).' ॥ 1-45-23 ॥
english translation
parizrAntò vayaHsthaza ca SaSTivarSò jarAnvitaH kaSudhitaH sa mahAraNye dadarza munima antike ॥ 1-45-23 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptस तं पप्रच्छ राजेन्द्रॊ मुनिं मौन वरतान्वितम न च किं चिद उवाचैनं स मुनिः पृच्छतॊ ऽपि सन ॥ १-४५-२४ ॥
'The Rishi was then observing the vow of silence. The king asked him about the deer, but, though asked, he made no reply.' ॥ 1-45-24 ॥
english translation
sa taM papraccha rAjendrò muniM mauna varatAnvitama na ca kiM cida uvAcainaM sa muniH pRcchatò 'pi sana ॥ 1-45-24 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptततॊ राजा कषुच छरमार्तस तं मुनिं सथाणुवत सथितम मौन वरतधरं शान्तं सद्यॊ मन्युवशं ययौ ॥ १-४५-२५ ॥
'At last the king, already tired with exertion and hunger, suddenly became angry with that Rishi sitting motionless like a piece of wood in observance of his vow of silence.' ॥ 1-45-25 ॥

tatò rAjA kaSuca charamArtasa taM muniM sathANuvata sathitama mauna varatadharaM zAntaM sadyò manyuvazaM yayau ॥ 1-45-25 ॥
