[स] गतमात्रं तु भर्तारं जरत्कारुर अवेदयत भरातुस तवरितम आगम्य यथातथ्यं तपॊधन ॥ १-४४-१ ॥

'Sauti said, 'O thou of ascetic wealth, soon after her lord had left her, Jaratkaru went to her brother. And she told him everything that had happened.' ॥ 1-44-1 ॥

ततः स भुजग शरेष्ठः शरुत्वा सुमहद अप्रियम उवाच भगिनीं दीनां तदा दीनतरः सवयम ॥ १-४४-२ ॥

'Afterward, the chief of serpents, hearing something very unpleasant, spoke to his distressed sister with great compassion, becoming himself distressed.' ॥ 1-44-2 ॥

जानामि भद्रे यत कार्यं परदाने कारणं च यत पन्नगानां हितार्थाय पुत्रस ते सयात ततॊ यदि ॥ १-४४-३ ॥

'And he said, "O amiable one, you are aware of the purpose and the underlying reason for your bestowal. If, from that union, a son is to be born for the welfare of the snakes.' ॥ 1-44-3 ॥

स सर्पसत्रात किल नॊ मॊक्षयिष्यति वीर्यवान एवं पितामहः पूर्वम उक्तवान मां सुरैः सह ॥ १-४४-४ ॥

'If endowed with strength, he will indeed rescue us from the serpent-sacrifice. This is what the Grandsire had declared in the presence of the gods in times past.' ॥ 1-44-4 ॥

अप्य अस्ति गर्भः सुभगे तस्मात ते मुनिसत्तमात न चेच्छाम्य अफलं तस्य दारकर्म मनीषिणः ॥ १-४४-५ ॥

'O fortunate one, have you conceived from your union with that best of Rishis? It is my heartfelt desire that my bestowal of you upon that wise one does not go in vain.' ॥ 1-44-5 ॥
