[मन्दपाल] न सत्रीणां विद्यते किं चिद अन्यत्र पुरुषान्तरात सापत्नकम ऋते लॊके भवितव्यं हि तत तथा ॥ १-२२४-२६ ॥

'Mandapala replied, "For women, there is nothing more destructive to their happiness, both in this world and the next, than a co-wife and a secret lover. These two ignite the fire of animosity like nothing else and cause immense anxiety."' ॥ 1-224-26 ॥

english translation

[mandapAla] na satrINAM vidyate kiM cida anyatra puruSAntarAta sApatnakama Rte lòke bhavitavyaM hi tata tathA ॥ 1-224-26 ॥

सुव्रतापि हि कल्याणी सर्वलॊकपरिश्रुता अरुन्धती पर्यशङ्कद वसिष्ठम ऋषिसत्तमम ॥ १-२२४-२७ ॥

'Even the virtuous and well-behaved Arundhati, renowned among all beings, once harbored jealousy towards the illustrious Vasishtha, known for his great purity of mind and unwavering devotion to his wife.' ॥ 1-224-27 ॥

suvratApi hi kalyANI sarvalòkaparizrutA arundhatI paryazaGkada vasiSThama RSisattamama ॥ 1-224-27 ॥

विशुद्धभावम अत्यन्तं सदा परियहिते रतम सप्तर्षिमध्यगं वीरम अवमेने च तं मुनिम ॥ १-२२४-२८ ॥

'Despite the sage's pure intentions, constant devotion to others' welfare, and esteemed position among the seven rishis, he was inexplicably disrespected by the subject of this verse.' ॥ 1-224-28 ॥

vizuddhabhAvama atyantaM sadA pariyahite ratama saptarSimadhyagaM vIrama avamene ca taM munima ॥ 1-224-28 ॥

अपध्यानेन सा तेन धूमारुण समप्रभा लक्ष्यालक्ष्या नाभिरूपा निमित्तम इव लक्ष्यते ॥ १-२२४-२९ ॥

'As a result of her disrespectful thoughts, she became a faint star, sometimes visible and sometimes not, akin to a troubled omen amidst the constellation of seven bright stars representing the seven Rishis.' ॥ 1-224-29 ॥

apadhyAnena sA tena dhUmAruNa samaprabhA lakSyAlakSyA nAbhirUpA nimittama iva lakSyate ॥ 1-224-29 ॥

अपत्यहेतॊः संप्राप्तं तथा तवम अपि माम इह इष्टम एवंगते हित्वा सा तथैव च वर्तसे ॥ १-२२४-३० ॥

'I looked to you for the sake of our children. I never wronged you, just as Vasishtha never wronged his wife.' ॥ 1-224-30 ॥
