[जरिता] अस्माद बिलान निष्पतितं शयेन आखुं जहार तम कषुद्रं गृहीत्वा पादाभ्यां भयं न भविता ततः ।। १-२२२-१ ।।

sanskrit

'Vaisampayana said, 'Hearing her sons' words, Jarita continued, 'The tiny mouse that emerged from this hole was seized by a hawk with its claws and carried away from here.' ।। 1-222-1 ।।

english translation

[jaritA] asmAda bilAna niSpatitaM zayena AkhuM jahAra tama kaSudraM gRhItvA pAdAbhyAM bhayaM na bhavitA tataH || 1-222-1 ||

hk transliteration

[षार्न्गकाह] न हृतं तं वयं विद्मः शयेनेनाखुं कथं चन अन्ये ऽपि भवितारॊ ऽतर तेभ्यॊ ऽपि भयम एव नः ।। १-२२२-२ ।।

sanskrit

'Therefore, you may now enter this hole fearlessly," said Jarita. The young ones replied, "We are not at all certain that the mouse has been taken away by the hawk. There may be other mice living here, and from them, we fear.' ।। 1-222-2 ।।

english translation

[SArngakAha] na hRtaM taM vayaM vidmaH zayenenAkhuM kathaM cana anye 'pi bhavitArò 'tara tebhyò 'pi bhayama eva naH || 1-222-2 ||

hk transliteration

संशयॊ हय अग्निर आगच्छेद दृष्टं वायॊर निवर्तनम मृत्युर नॊ बिलवासिभ्यॊ भवेन मातर असंशयम ।। १-२२२-३ ।।

sanskrit

'There is doubt whether fire will come, but the return of wind has been seen. Death will certainly come to us, the dwellers of burrows, O mother.' ।। 1-222-3 ।।

english translation

saMzayò haya agnira Agaccheda dRSTaM vAyòra nivartanama mRtyura nò bilavAsibhyò bhavena mAtara asaMzayama || 1-222-3 ||

hk transliteration

निःसंशयात संशयितॊ मृत्युर मातर विशिष्यते चर खे तवं यथान्यायं पुत्रान वेत्स्यसि शॊभनान ।। १-२२२-४ ।।

sanskrit

'Mother, a situation with uncertain death is better than one with certain death. Therefore, you must escape yourself; if you survive, you can have other children as good as us.' ।। 1-222-4 ।।

english translation

niHsaMzayAta saMzayitò mRtyura mAtara viziSyate cara khe tavaM yathAnyAyaM putrAna vetsyasi zòbhanAna || 1-222-4 ||

hk transliteration

[जरिता] अहं वै शयेनम आयान्तम अद्राक्षं बिलम अन्तिकात संचरन्तं समादाय जहाराखुं बिलाद बली ।। १-२२२-५ ।।

sanskrit

'Their mother then said, "My children, I saw with my own eyes the powerful hawk, the noblest of birds, swoop down and fly away with the mouse from the hole."' ।। 1-222-5 ।।

english translation

[jaritA] ahaM vai zayenama AyAntama adrAkSaM bilama antikAta saMcarantaM samAdAya jahArAkhuM bilAda balI || 1-222-5 ||
