नवमं पर्व निर्दिष्टम एतद अद्भुतम अर्थवत एकॊन षष्टिर अध्यायास तत्र संख्या विशारदैः ॥ १-२-१७६ ॥
' These all have been described in the wonderful ninth Parva. Consists of sixty-one chapters, as enumerated by the learned sages.' ॥ 1-2-176 ॥

navamaM parva nirdiSTama etada adbhutama arthavata ekòna SaSTira adhyAyAsa tatra saMkhyA vizAradaiH ॥ 1-2-176 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptसंख्याता बहु वृत्तान्ताः शलॊकाग्रं चात्र शस्यते तरीणि शलॊकसहस्राणि दवे शते विंशतिस तथा मुनिना संप्रणीतानि कौरवाणां यशॊ भृताम ॥ १-२-१७७ ॥
' The sections are numerous, and the stories are extensive. Here, the total count of shlokas is three thousand two hundred, with two hundred and twenty being told in two hundred chapters. This has been accurately determined by the wise sage and illustrious narrator among the Kauravas.' ॥ 1-2-177 ॥

saMkhyAtA bahu vRttAntAH zalòkAgraM cAtra zasyate tarINi zalòkasahasrANi dave zate viMzatisa tathA muninA saMpraNItAni kauravANAM yazò bhRtAma ॥ 1-2-177 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptअतः परं परवक्ष्यामि सौप्तिकं पर्व दारुणम भग्नॊरुं यत्र राजानं दुर्यॊधनम अमर्षणम ॥ १-२-१७८ ॥
'Then shall I describe the Parva called Sauptika of frightful incidents. On the Pandavas having gone away, the mighty charioteers, Kritavarman, Kripa, and the son of Drona, came to the field of battle in the evening and there saw King Duryodhana lying on the ground, his thighs broken, and himself covered with blood.' ॥ 1-2-178 ॥

ataH paraM paravakSyAmi sauptikaM parva dAruNama bhagnòruM yatra rAjAnaM duryòdhanama amarSaNama ॥ 1-2-178 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptवयपयातेषु पार्थेषु तरयस ते ऽभयाययू रथाः कृतवर्मा कृपॊ दरौणिः सायाह्ने रुधिरॊक्षिताः ॥ १-२-१७९ ॥
'In the twilight of the day, when he sons of King Dhritarashtra, were being rescued by the valiant warriors, the chariots of Krutavarma, Kripa, and Drona's son Ashwatthama, soaked in blood, served to provide protection and assurance to the frightened Pandavas' ॥ 1-2-179 ॥

hk transliteration by Sanscriptपरतिजज्ञे दृढक्रॊधॊ दरौणिर यत्र महारथः अहत्वा सर्वपाञ्चालान धृष्टद्युम्नपुरॊगमान पाण्डवांश च सहामात्यान न विमॊक्ष्यामि दंशनम ॥ १-२-१८० ॥
'Then the great charioteer, the son of Drona, of terrible wrath, vowed, 'without killing all the Panchalas including Drishtadyumna, and the Pandavas also with all their allies, I will not take off the armor.' Having spoken those words, the three warriors leaving Duryodhana's side entered the great forest just as the sun was setting.' ॥ 1-2-180 ॥
