[वै] ते ऽलंकृताः कुण्डलिनॊ युवानः; परस्परं सपर्धमानाः समेताः अस्त्रं बलं चात्मनि मन्यमानाः; सर्वे समुत्पेतुर अहं कृतेन ॥ १-१७८-१ ॥
'Vaisampayana said, "Then those youthful princes, adorned with earrings, eager to outdo one another, each considering himself accomplished in arms and endowed with strength, stood up brandishing their weapons."' ॥ 1-178-1 ॥
english translation
[vai] te 'laMkRtAH kuNDalinò yuvAnaH; parasparaM sapardhamAnAH sametAH astraM balaM cAtmani manyamAnAH; sarve samutpetura ahaM kRtena ॥ 1-178-1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptरूपेण वीर्येण कुलेन चैव; धर्मेण चैवापि च यौवनेन समृद्धदर्पा मदवेगभिन्ना; मत्ता यथा हैमवता गजेन्द्राः ॥ १-१७८-२ ॥
'And intoxicated with the pride of beauty, prowess, lineage, knowledge, wealth, and youth, they resembled Himalayan elephants in the rutting season, with crowns split from excess temporal juice.' ॥ 1-178-2 ॥
english translation
rUpeNa vIryeNa kulena caiva; dharmeNa caivApi ca yauvanena samRddhadarpA madavegabhinnA; mattA yathA haimavatA gajendrAH ॥ 1-178-2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptपरस्परं सपर्धया परेक्षमाणाः; संकल्पजेनापि परिप्लुताङ्गाः कृष्णा ममैषेत्य अभिभाषमाणा; नृपासनेभ्यः सहसॊपतस्थुः ॥ १-१७८-३ ॥
'And seeing each other with envy, stirred by the god of desire, they swiftly rose from their royal seats, declaring, 'Krishna shall be mine.'" ॥ 1-178-3 ॥
english translation
parasparaM sapardhayA parekSamANAH; saMkalpajenApi pariplutAGgAH kRSNA mamaiSetya abhibhASamANA; nRpAsanebhyaH sahasòpatasthuH ॥ 1-178-3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptते कषत्रिया रङ्ग गताः समेता; जिगीषमाणा दरुपदात्मजां ताम चकाशिरे पर्वतराजकन्याम; उमां यथा देवगणाः समेताः ॥ १-१७८-४ ॥
'And the Kshatriyas assembled in that amphitheater, each eager to win the daughter of Drupada, resembled the celestials of old standing around Uma, the daughter of the King of mountains.' ॥ 1-178-4 ॥

te kaSatriyA raGga gatAH sametA; jigISamANA darupadAtmajAM tAma cakAzire parvatarAjakanyAma; umAM yathA devagaNAH sametAH ॥ 1-178-4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptकन्दर्प बाणाभिनिपीडिताङ्गाः; कृष्णागतैस ते हृदयैर नरेन्द्राः रङ्गावतीर्णा दरुपदात्मजार्थं; दवेष्यान हि चक्रुः सुहृदॊ ऽपि तत्र ॥ १-१७८-५ ॥
'Afflicted by the arrows of the god of love and completely captivated by thoughts of Krishna, those princes descended into the amphitheatre with the aim of winning the maiden from Panchala, even beginning to view their best friends with jealousy.' ॥ 1-178-5 ॥
