पुरॊहितः सॊमकानां मन्त्रविद बराह्मणः शुचिः परिस्तीर्य जुहावाग्निम आज्येन विधिना तदा ॥ १-१७६-३१ ॥

'The Brahmana priest of the lunar lineage, well-versed in all mantras, then kindled the sacrificial fire and performed the ritual of pouring clarified butter onto it with proper rites.' ॥ 1-176-31 ॥

english translation

puròhitaH sòmakAnAM mantravida barAhmaNaH zuciH paristIrya juhAvAgnima Ajyena vidhinA tadA ॥ 1-176-31 ॥

स तर्पयित्वा जवलनं बराह्मणान सवस्ति वाच्य च वारयाम आस सर्वाणि वादित्राणि समन्ततः ॥ १-१७६-३२ ॥

'After pleasing Agni with these offerings and having the Brahmanas recite the auspicious benedictory chants, he silenced the musical instruments that had been playing all around.' ॥ 1-176-32 ॥

sa tarpayitvA javalanaM barAhmaNAna savasti vAcya ca vArayAma Asa sarvANi vAditrANi samantataH ॥ 1-176-32 ॥

निःशब्दे तु कृते तस्मिन धृष्टद्युम्नॊ विशां पते रङ्गमध्यगतस तत्र मेघगम्भीरया गिरा वाक्यम उच्चैर जगादेदं शलक्ष्णम अर्थवद उत्तमम ॥ १-१७६-३३ ॥

'As the vast amphitheatre fell silent, O monarch, Dhrishtadyumna, whose voice resonated deep like the beat of a kettledrum or the rumble of clouds, took his sister's arm and stood amidst the gathering. With a voice as loud and profound as thunder, he spoke these words of profound significance to the assembled kings:' ॥ 1-176-33 ॥

niHzabde tu kRte tasmina dhRSTadyumnò vizAM pate raGgamadhyagatasa tatra meghagambhIrayA girA vAkyama uccaira jagAdedaM zalakSNama arthavada uttamama ॥ 1-176-33 ॥

इदं धनुर लक्ष्यम इमे च बाणाः; शृण्वन्तु मे पार्थिवाः सर्व एव यन्त्रच छिद्रेणाभ्यतिक्रम्य लक्ष्यं; समर्पयध्वं खगमैर दशार्धैः ॥ १-१७६-३४ ॥

'Hear, assembled kings: this is the bow, that is the target, and these are the arrows. Shoot the target through the aperture of the machine with these five sharpened arrows.' ॥ 1-176-34 ॥

idaM dhanura lakSyama ime ca bANAH; zRNvantu me pArthivAH sarva eva yantraca chidreNAbhyatikramya lakSyaM; samarpayadhvaM khagamaira dazArdhaiH ॥ 1-176-34 ॥

एतत कर्ता कर्म सुदुष्करं; यः कुलेन रूपेण बलेन युक्तः तस्याद्य भार्या भगिनी ममेयं; कृष्णा भवित्री न मृषा बरवीमि ॥ १-१७६-३५ ॥

'This task is difficult to achieve, even for one endowed with noble lineage, form, and strength. This woman, my sister, is now his wife; Krishna, I speak this truthfully, not falsely.' ॥ 1-176-35 ॥

etata kartA karma suduSkaraM; yaH kulena rUpeNa balena yuktaH tasyAdya bhAryA bhaginI mameyaM; kRSNA bhavitrI na mRSA baravImi ॥ 1-176-35 ॥
