[आर्ज] राज्ञा कल्माषपादेन गुरौ बरह्मविदां वरे कारणं किं पुरस्कृत्य भार्या वै संनियॊजिता ॥ १-१७३-१ ॥

'Arjuna inquired, "O Gandharva, why did King Kalmashapada command his queen to approach the foremost among those knowledgeable in the Vedas, the sage Vasishtha?' ॥ 1-173-1 ॥

[Arja] rAjJA kalmASapAdena gurau barahmavidAM vare kAraNaM kiM puraskRtya bhAryA vai saMniyòjitA ॥ 1-173-1 ॥

जानता च परं धर्मं लॊक्यं तेन महात्मना अगम्यागमनं कस्माद वसिष्ठेन महात्मना कृतं तेन पुरा सर्वं वक्तुम अर्हसि पृच्छतः ॥ १-१७३-२ ॥

'Furthermore, why did the illustrious and great Rishi Vasishtha himself, who was well-versed in all moral principles, come to know a woman he should not have known? O friend, was this an act of sin on Vasishtha's part? I seek clarity on these doubts from you.' ॥ 1-173-2 ॥

jAnatA ca paraM dharmaM lòkyaM tena mahAtmanA agamyAgamanaM kasmAda vasiSThena mahAtmanA kRtaM tena purA sarvaM vaktuma arhasi pRcchataH ॥ 1-173-2 ॥

[ग] धनंजय निबॊधेदं यन मां तवं परिपृच्छसि वसिष्ठं परति दुर्धर्षं तथामित्र सहं नृपम ॥ १-१७३-३ ॥

'The Gandharva replied, "O irrepressible Dhananjaya, listen to me as I answer the question you have asked regarding Vasishtha and King Kalmashapada, the cherisher of friends."' ॥ 1-173-3 ॥

[ga] dhanaMjaya nibòdhedaM yana mAM tavaM paripRcchasi vasiSThaM parati durdharSaM tathAmitra sahaM nRpama ॥ 1-173-3 ॥

कथितं ते मया पूर्वं यथा शप्तः स पार्थिवः शक्तिना भरतश्रेष्ठ वासिष्ठेन महात्मना ॥ १-१७३-४ ॥

'O best of the Bharatas, I have already narrated to you the curse inflicted upon King Kalmashapada by Shakti, the illustrious son of Vasishtha.' ॥ 1-173-4 ॥

kathitaM te mayA pUrvaM yathA zaptaH sa pArthivaH zaktinA bharatazreSTha vAsiSThena mahAtmanA ॥ 1-173-4 ॥

स तु शापवशं पराप्तः करॊधपर्याकुलेक्षणः निर्जगाम पुराद राजा सह दारः परंतपः ॥ १-१७३-५ ॥

'Under the sway of the curse, King Kalmashapada, the vanquisher of foes, his eyes swirling with anger, departed from his capital with his wife.' ॥ 1-173-5 ॥

sa tu zApavazaM parAptaH karòdhaparyAkulekSaNaH nirjagAma purAda rAjA saha dAraH paraMtapaH ॥ 1-173-5 ॥
