स कदा चिद अथॊ राजा शरीमान उरु यशा भुवि चचार मृगयां पार्थ पर्वतॊपवने किल ॥ १-१६०-२१ ॥

'Once upon a time, O Partha, the illustrious king Samvarana, renowned for his beauty and immeasurable prowess, went on a hunting expedition into the depths of the mountain forests.' ॥ 1-160-21 ॥

sa kadA cida athò rAjA zarImAna uru yazA bhuvi cacAra mRgayAM pArtha parvatòpavane kila ॥ 1-160-21 ॥

चरतॊ मृगयां तस्य कषुत्पिपासा शरमान्वितः ममार राज्ञः कौन्तेय गिराव अप्रतिमॊ हयः ॥ १-१६०-२२ ॥

'As the king pursued deer in the forest, O Partha, his excellent horse, overcome by hunger, thirst, and fatigue, perished on the mountains.' ॥ 1-160-22 ॥

caratò mRgayAM tasya kaSutpipAsA zaramAnvitaH mamAra rAjJaH kaunteya girAva apratimò hayaH ॥ 1-160-22 ॥

स मृताश्वश चरन पार्थ पद्भ्याम एव गिरौ नृपः ददर्शासदृशीं लॊके कन्याम आयतलॊचनाम ॥ १-१६०-२३ ॥

'Leaving his horse behind, O Arjuna, the king roamed the mountain slopes on foot. During his wanderings, he came across a maiden of unmatched beauty with expansive eyes.' ॥ 1-160-23 ॥

'The valiant monarch, the crusher of adversaries, and the tiger among kings, stood alone, observing the maiden who was also alone, motionless, and gazing at her intently.' ॥ 1-160-24 ॥

sa eka ekAma AsAdya kanyAM tAma arimardanaH tasthau nRpatizArdUlaH pazyanna avicalekSaNaH ॥ 1-160-24 ॥

स हि तां तर्कयाम आस रूपतॊ नृपतिः शरियम पुनः संतर्कयाम आस रवेर भरष्टाम इव परभाम ॥ १-१६०-२५ ॥

'Enraptured by her beauty, for a moment, the king believed her to be the goddess Sri herself. Then he saw her as the very embodiment of the sun's radiant beams.' ॥ 1-160-25 ॥
