[स] ततॊ ऽभरशिखराकारैर गिरिशृङ्गैर अलंकृतम मन्दरं पर्वत वरं लता जालसमावृतम ॥ १-१६-१ ॥
'Sauti said, 'There is a mountain called Mandara adorned with cloud-like peaks. It is the best of mountains, and is covered all over with intertwining herbs.' ॥ 1-16-1 ॥
english translation
[sa] tatò 'bharazikharAkAraira girizRGgaira alaMkRtama mandaraM parvata varaM latA jAlasamAvRtama ॥ 1-16-1 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptनानाविहगसंघुष्टं नाना दंष्ट्रि समाकुलम किंनरैर अप्सरॊभिश च देवैर अपि च सेवितम ॥ १-१६-२ ॥
'Countless birds fill the air with their melodious tunes, while various wild beasts roam freely. The gods, Apsaras, and Kinnaras frequently grace the surroundings with their presence.' ॥ 1-16-2 ॥
english translation
nAnAvihagasaMghuSTaM nAnA daMSTri samAkulama kiMnaraira apsaròbhiza ca devaira api ca sevitama ॥ 1-16-2 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptएकादश सहस्राणि यॊजनानां समुच्छ्रितम अधॊ भूमेः सहस्रेषु तावत्स्व एव परतिष्ठितम ॥ १-१६-३ ॥
'Upwards it rises eleven thousand yojanas, and descends downwards as much.' ॥ 1-16-3 ॥
english translation
ekAdaza sahasrANi yòjanAnAM samucchritama adhò bhUmeH sahasreSu tAvatsva eva paratiSThitama ॥ 1-16-3 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptतम उद्धर्तुं न शक्ता वै सर्वे देवगणास तदा विष्णुम आसीनम अभ्येत्य बरह्माणं चेदम अब्रुवन ॥ १-१६-४ ॥
'The gods attempted to tear it up for use as a churning rod, but they faced the same difficulty with Vishnu and Brahma, who were seated together.' ॥ 1-16-4 ॥
english translation
tama uddhartuM na zaktA vai sarve devagaNAsa tadA viSNuma AsInama abhyetya barahmANaM cedama abruvana ॥ 1-16-4 ॥
hk transliteration by Sanscriptभवन्ताव अत्र कुरुतां बुद्धिं नैःश्रेयसीं पराम मन्दरॊद्धरणे यत्नः करियतां च हिताय नः ॥ १-१६-५ ॥
'They urged them, "Contemplate a potent plan, O gods! Deliberate on a strategy to displace Mount Mandara for our benefit."' ॥ 1-16-5 ॥

bhavantAva atra kurutAM buddhiM naiHzreyasIM parAma mandaròddharaNe yatnaH kariyatAM ca hitAya naH ॥ 1-16-5 ॥
