[बराह्मण] गङ्गा दवारं परति महान बभूवर्षिर महातपाः भरद्वाजॊ महाप्राज्ञः सततं संशितव्रतः ।। १-१५४-१ ।।

sanskrit

'Bharadwaja, a great sage of rigid vows and profound wisdom, devoted to the austerest penances, lived in the region where the sacred Ganges descended into the plains.' ।। 1-154-1 ।।

english translation

[barAhmaNa] gaGgA davAraM parati mahAna babhUvarSira mahAtapAH bharadvAjò mahAprAjJaH satataM saMzitavrataH || 1-154-1 ||

सॊ ऽभिषेक्तुं गतॊ गङ्गां पूर्वम एवागतां सतीम ददर्शाप्सरसं तत्र घृताचीम आप्लुताम ऋषिः ।। १-१५४-२ ।।

sanskrit

'One day, as the sage Bharadwaja came to the banks of the sacred Ganges to perform his ablutions, he saw the apsara Ghritachi standing there, having already completed her own sacred bathing rituals.' ।। 1-154-2 ।।

english translation

sò 'bhiSektuM gatò gaGgAM pUrvama evAgatAM satIma dadarzApsarasaM tatra ghRtAcIma AplutAma RSiH || 1-154-2 ||

hk transliteration

तस्या वायुर नदीतीरे वसनं वयहरत तदा अपकृष्टाम्बरां दृष्ट्वा ताम ऋषिश चकमे ततः ।। १-१५४-३ ।।

sanskrit

'As fate would have it, a gust of wind arose and disrobed the apsara Ghritachi as she stood on the riverbank after her ablutions, and upon beholding her in that disrobed state, the sage Bharadwaja was overcome by desire.' ।। 1-154-3 ।।

english translation

tasyA vAyura nadItIre vasanaM vayaharata tadA apakRSTAmbarAM dRSTvA tAma RSiza cakame tataH || 1-154-3 ||

hk transliteration

तस्यां संसक्तमनसः कौमार बरह्मचारिणः हृष्टस्य रेतश चस्कन्द तद ऋषिर दरॊण आदधे ।। १-१५४-४ ।।

sanskrit

'Although the sage Bharadwaja had been practicing brahmacharya (celibacy) from his youth, upon being overcome by desire upon seeing the disrobed Ghritachi, his vital fluid was involuntarily discharged. Acting swiftly, the rishi caught his semen in a ceramic pot (drona) to prevent its wastage.' ।। 1-154-4 ।।

english translation

tasyAM saMsaktamanasaH kaumAra barahmacAriNaH hRSTasya retaza caskanda tada RSira daròNa Adadhe || 1-154-4 ||

hk transliteration

ततः समभवद दरॊणः कुमारस तस्य धीमतः अध्यगीष्ट स वेदांश च वेदाङ्गानि च सर्वशः ।। १-१५४-५ ।।

sanskrit

'From that vital fluid which the wise sage had carefully preserved in a pot, a son was born who became known as Drona (the pot-born). This Drona diligently studied all the Vedas along with their numerous auxiliary branches of knowledge.' ।। 1-154-5 ।।

english translation

tataH samabhavada daròNaH kumArasa tasya dhImataH adhyagISTa sa vedAMza ca vedAGgAni ca sarvazaH || 1-154-5 ||
