जीविते परमं दुःखं जीविते परमॊ जवरः जीविते वर्तमानस्य दवन्द्वानाम आगमॊ धरुवः ॥ १-१४५-२१ ॥

'Life, indeed, is a tale of suffering and affliction!' ॥ 1-145-21 ॥

jIvite paramaM duHkhaM jIvite paramò javaraH jIvite vartamAnasya davandvAnAma Agamò dharuvaH ॥ 1-145-21 ॥

एकात्मापि हि धर्मार्थौ कामं च न निषेवते एतैश च विप्रयॊगॊ ऽपि दुःखं परमकं मतम ॥ १-१४५-२२ ॥

'Though the soul is singular, it is compelled to chase after virtue, wealth, and pleasure simultaneously, often leading to discord and immense suffering.' ॥ 1-145-22 ॥

english translation

ekAtmApi hi dharmArthau kAmaM ca na niSevate etaiza ca viprayògò 'pi duHkhaM paramakaM matama ॥ 1-145-22 ॥

आहुः के चित परं मॊक्षं स च नास्ति कथं चन अर्थप्राप्तौ च नरकः कृत्स्न एवॊपपद्यते ॥ १-१४५-२३ ॥

'Some claim that salvation is the ultimate goal of our desires. However, I believe it can never be attained. The pursuit and acquisition of wealth, they say, is akin to hell.' ॥ 1-145-23 ॥

AhuH ke cita paraM mòkSaM sa ca nAsti kathaM cana arthaprAptau ca narakaH kRtsna evòpapadyate ॥ 1-145-23 ॥

अर्थेप्सुता परं दुःखम अर्थप्राप्तौ ततॊ ऽधिकम जातस्नेहस्य चार्थेषु विप्रयॊगे महत्तरम ॥ १-१४५-२४ ॥

'It brings about misery both during the pursuit and after its attainment. The possessor becomes afflicted with sorrow if any misfortune befalls their possessions, for they are deeply attached to them.' ॥ 1-145-24 ॥

arthepsutA paraM duHkhama arthaprAptau tatò 'dhikama jAtasnehasya cArtheSu viprayòge mahattarama ॥ 1-145-24 ॥

न हि यॊगं परपश्यामि येन मुच्येयम आपदः पुत्रदारेण वा सार्धं पराद्रवेयाम अनामयम ॥ १-१४५-२५ ॥

'I see no means of escaping this peril, nor do I see a way to flee from this place with my wife to a safer region.' ॥ 1-145-25 ॥

na hi yògaM parapazyAmi yena mucyeyama ApadaH putradAreNa vA sArdhaM parAdraveyAma anAmayama ॥ 1-145-25 ॥
