अयं पृथायास तनयः कनीयान पाण्डुनन्दनः कौरवॊ भवतां सार्धं दवन्द्वयुद्धं करिष्यति ॥ १-१२६-३१ ॥

'This Pandava, the youngest son of Kunti, is aligned with the Kauravas; he will face you in battle.' ॥ 1-126-31 ॥

ayaM pRthAyAsa tanayaH kanIyAna pANDunandanaH kauravò bhavatAM sArdhaM davandvayuddhaM kariSyati ॥ 1-126-31 ॥

तवम अप्य एवं महाबाहॊ मातरं पितरं कुलम कथयस्व नरेन्द्राणां येषां तवं कुलवर्धनः ततॊ विदित्वा पार्थस तवां परतियॊत्स्यति वा न वा ॥ १-१२६-३२ ॥

'But, O mighty-armed one, you must also declare your lineage, the names of your father and mother, and the royal family to which you are a credit. Upon knowing this, Partha will decide whether to engage in combat with you or not. Sons of kings do not battle those of unknown or ignoble birth.' ॥ 1-126-32 ॥

tavama apya evaM mahAbAhò mAtaraM pitaraM kulama kathayasva narendrANAM yeSAM tavaM kulavardhanaH tatò viditvA pArthasa tavAM paratiyòtsyati vA na vA ॥ 1-126-32 ॥

'Vaishampayana continued, "As Kripa addressed him thus, Karna's countenance resembled a lotus, pale and torn by the pelting showers of the rainy season."' ॥ 1-126-33 ॥

evama uktasya karNasya varIDAvanatama Ananama babhau varSAmbubhiH kalinnaM padmama AgalitaM yathA ॥ 1-126-33 ॥

[दुर] आचार्य तरिविधा यॊनी राज्ञां शास्त्रविनिश्चये तत कुलीनश च शूरश च सेनां यश च परकर्षति ॥ १-१२६-३४ ॥

'Duryodhana said, "O preceptor, according to the scriptures, three types of individuals can claim royal status: those of royal lineage, heroes, and those who command armies."' ॥ 1-126-34 ॥

'If Phalguna (Arjuna) is reluctant to engage in battle with one who is not a king, then I will crown Karna as the king of Anga.' ॥ 1-126-35 ॥
