[व] तच छरुत्वा तापस वचः पाण्डुश चिन्तापरॊ ऽभवत आत्मनॊ मृगशापेन जानन्न उपहतां करियाम ॥ १-१११-२१ ॥

'Vaisampayana continued, 'Hearing these words of the ascetics, Pandu, remembering the loss of his procreative powers owing to the curse of the deer, began to reflect deeply.' ॥ 1-111-21 ॥

सॊ ऽबरवीद विजने कुन्तीं धर्मपत्नीं यशस्विनीम अपत्यॊत्पादने यॊगम आपदि परसमर्थयन ॥ १-१११-२२ ॥

'Addressing his esteemed wife Kunti, Pandu spoke privately, urging her to endeavor to conceive offspring during this time of adversity.' ॥ 1-111-22 ॥

सॊ ऽबरवीद विजने कुन्तीं धर्मपत्नीं यशस्विनीम अपत्यॊत्पादने यॊगम आपदि परसमर्थयन ॥ १-१११-२३ ॥

'The perpetuation of progeny is indeed the established principle in the world, ordained by righteousness." Thus did Kunti and the wise Vidura acknowledge the eternal nature of duty.' ॥ 1-111-23 ॥

इष्टं दत्तं तपस तप्तं नियमश च सवनुष्ठितः सर्वम एवानपत्यस्य न पावनम इहॊच्यते ॥ १-१११-२४ ॥

'That which is earned with effort, bestowed as a gift, or acquired through diligent observance of prescribed practices—everything, indeed, is considered unpurifying for one without offspring.' ॥ 1-111-24 ॥

iSTaM dattaM tapasa taptaM niyamaza ca savanuSThitaH sarvama evAnapatyasya na pAvanama ihòcyate ॥ 1-111-24 ॥

'Knowing this, O Shuchi, I perceive it thus—I shall not attain the auspicious realms without offspring.' ॥ 1-111-25 ॥
